BEST SOUNDING US ARMY 6X6?

Post by Joe Gopan » Fri Mar 29, 2019 9:08 pm

The 331 GOLD COMET powered 2-1/2 Ton REO Gasser, of coarse.
There is nothing any sweeter sounding than the early morning sound of an awakening Army base with REOs leaving their motorpools and shifting up thru the range of gears

Next best, the Continental R-6602 powered 5 Ton 6X6 Gasser is next.
Music to my ears.

The GMC 270 powered CCKW is a close second, the GMC 270 has a distinctive bark, but is a pussycat when compared to the distinct sound of the Gold Comet REO engine.
They even sounded better during the Korean War period at DOW Field across the road with the sound of a few F-51's and a T-6 or two in the air.

I GOT to go with the GMC 270 powered CCKW. LOVE that beautiful sound of that beast revving up thru the gears! Sound of perfection!

The REO Gasser sounds like a CCKW on steroids. Both are favorites and were a familiar sound to all who served way back when.

My first military vehicle was (is) a M35 Gasser. I was looking for a multi fuel so I could run waste oil on the cheap. This truck came up at local auction and because of bad info (wrong times given) I ended up putting in a last minute bid without getting a chance to inspect at all. This newby assumed that all these trucks were the multi fuel engine, so no worries, right? -Wrong- I get a call a week later saying I had won this and please get it gone.
We head down to pick it up. OOOHHH! NICE old truck! Local-no shipping! Can drive it the 23miles home. Hey, this is turning out to be a really good deal! WHAT!? :o Gas? What you mean gas? Oh man, now what am I gonna do with this thing?
Oh well-- stuck with this pig in poke now so check fluids, bump (new) tires and look to see if most of the parts are firmly attached and it starts it right up. Actually really nice shape since it had just retired from active fire department duty. Geeze--purrs like a kitten-well a very big cat more like a Saber toothed Tiger. Decent power and a joy to drive!
Actually bought a Multi-fuel in a can for the swap 7 years ago. It's still in the can and it will not go in this truck 8) . Love the sound of the 331!

I think and M35A2C Turbo model pulling up to the FOB in Afghanistan in 2009 with USAF Red Horse Personnel sounded best. To she them (two) still in the running and not being an A3 monstrosity or FLMTV or MRAP and watch her for several months do her duty with all the other trucks breaking down from sand and dirt....sweet.
Also especially nice to hear several turbo models coming up a trail at 0500 following a cold/wet Germany or hot/wet Fort Sherman, Panama long exercise. Heck it was nice just to hear her run chow in on occasion.
