FUNNY 6X6 MEMORY

Post by Ben Dover » Fri Dec 02, 2011 8:48 pm

Even after nearly 60 years this is still very vivid. The USAF at Dow Field had just received some of their first M-Series trucks. I heard this coming several minutes before I saw it, an Airman was Towing a small (2000#) Fork Lift out the Main Gate to Dow and past our business with a brand new 2 1/2 Ton REO 6X6 M-108 Crane Truck (Wrecker) with at least a 50' tow cable to a civilian truck shop just up the road. The driver had the 6X6 in Low Gear Low Range and had the gas pedal right to the mat. It was funny. End of story.

They are still vivid and come back to life in the Japanese KoKu Fan #84 photos of 14th Fighter Group P-84B's and Colonel Schillings 4th Fighter Group F-80B's as they pass thru Dow Field in 1948.
The sight of the 5 Ton 4X2 Tractor with the torn cab cover at Dow that is pictured in the magazine is still as vivid as when I saw this truck daily in 1948.
