Wartime Colour Photo Of A CCKW

Post by Vulture » Wed Oct 12, 2011 7:11 am

Stumbled across this high quality colour slideshow on the web. Spot the tantalising photo of the CCKW 352/353. Just a shame more of the vehicle isn’t shown.

That's my favorite CCKW Photo, it is an early CCKW with the 1574 Cab, the number on the I.D. Plate on the cowl is not that far off from the 1574 I.D. Plate on my CCKW. 1574 Cab was installed on what is known as 1St Series CCKW , they have the civilian style Instruments and slightly militarized cab.
It wasn't too many years before this photo was taken that that mechanic was caring for horses.

I like the early style blue louvre black out marker lights. They are on my G.M.C. AFKX 352 8-G Light Ordnance Maintenance Vehicle that is yet to be restored.
One discrepancy though, the photo of the A model Mustang gives the impression that Inglewood Cal. is mountainous. It is not. Those mountains are more than likely the Angeles National Forest, about 30 miles north of Inglewood.
Other than that I really like how crystal clear those photos are. Great site, thanks.

Gotta differ with the model of the Mustang. The First Mustangs put into production for the Army Air Force and Britain were the P-51 (no suffix) armed with 4 20MM cannon, The P-51A model were armed with the 50 Cal Mg in the wings, and did not have the cannons. The P-51 was the firs model to go into combat and were issued to the British. Still an early mustang of the 41-early 42 period tho.

Hi Ben dover ... I take exeption to you quote ..
"first model to go into combat and were issued to the British."

If I understan the history of the P51 correctly , this fighter was commisioned , designed and built to British speck... Orders By the British War Dept before the Americans even Enterd into the war ... the P51 was even named the MUSTANG by the British, it would be a difficult to argue that the Mustang was an American Aircraft (after all We the British had commisioned it ) and could be "issued" to the British  ...

Well, it was 100% made in USA, and the first combat kill by an American Pilot was during action around Dieppe in an RAF Mustang I piloted by Hollis Hills who volunteered for service in RAF. Originally the British wanted the P-40 and North American Aviation was asked to build some P-40's. Dutch Kindleburger, the President of North American Aviation suggested he could come up with a better aircraft in the same time frame, hence the Mustang I (British) P-51 American. They were born in the same chicken coop. The US took over the contracts for the Mustang Production and any production the RAF got was thru lendlease. Few if any RAF Mustangs were ever paid for due to the terms of Lendlease. The rest is interesting WWII history.

Hi Ben .. Not In disagreement with the fact that the Mustang is American ..But Had It not been for a Direct request from the British War Dept To North American Aviation for a Fighter of a Curtiss P40 ilk, the Mustang may have taken longer to see the light of day..the first P51s even look P40 like ..
I am aware that after development the P51 was also delivered to the USAAC for evaluation .. My point is that the P51 Mustang came about as a direct result of a British request for a Fighter from the N.A.A ..my Issue is with the word ISSUED which suggests that the American Government/USAAC had commissioned the P51 and there fore owned the Fighter and as such was then able to Issue/Sell Lend etc to someone else ...

and to add to that..the Mustang only became a Fantastic aircraft after we pu the Merlin engine into it :D

You are correct that the Mustang is a result of the British request and it may not have been developed into the aircraft as we all recognize it. The planets were lined up perfectly when it came to the creation of the Mustang.

I wish they would have shown more of the engine so we could get a better idea what parts were painted what color! Very cool pictures though, the girls back then were so cute!

I think the most important thing we can learn from war time photos is the the equipment didn't look factory fresh when it was in the field!

I've looked at that photo a number of times, and never noticed the mirror visible over his left shoulder... wonder why it's facing the front!

Early 1st Series GMC Mirrors had that rolled edge, the mirror is not facing the front. Visit the Bryce Sunderlin CCKW articles and in the CCKW book by David Doyle and you will discover these same mirrors.

Note the different shade of O.D. on the CCKW firewall compared to that on the outside. The 1574 1st Series Cab is from 1941.
