Well
Took Phantom out today as I needed to move her from one Barn to another as I have to get ready for winter and the tractor needs to be able to come out of the barn so she went back home. While I was driving her I took US Rt 40 and here is some of the video I took.
Enjoy

Thanks for the ride along Ken. Looks like you had fun. Ya' know, 45 M.P.H. was pretty fast back in the day.
Question; do the Studebaker trucks have locking rear differentials? I want to say that I remember reading that here somewhere. Not sure though.

Hi Sgt Hancock
No the US6 did not have locking differentials sorry may have been one of the later models of trucks
Cheers

I did see that your speedo was bouncing between 40 and 43. Still that's pretty fast for your old girl, and what, an engine that produces around 90 H.P.!? Still fun, anyway you slice it.
When I had my G-7117, I had a dream of having fuel dumps for me spread out across the Aussie outback along a chosen route that would span the widest part of Australia. Then do a walk-about in the truck.

Well gang its been a while since any updates on Phantom.

This past week I went out to where Phantom is kept and went to start her up. With the cold outside being almost below zero for the last week I wondered if she would start up in her barn. Well to my surprise with a little go go juice she woke up. After about a minute of her settling down she started to purr like normal. Let her run till she got up to about 140-150 and decided to take her out for a drive to stretch her legs. We drove her for about 2 miles and then brought her home. Well I wasnt done yet so I took her out into the field and play in the snow that wass about one and a half foot deep. Man having the bed on the back really made a difference in traction.

So afterwards we decided to look into the bed and the top bows. Well we have two sets of bows one is a metal post that came off of a studebaker and the other has wood posts that came with the bed.
When we installed the metal post bow it is about 6-8 inches shorter so if you were to sit on the troop seats your head would smack the bows.
When we installed the wood post bows I had about 4-5 inches above my head so that would give enough room with a helmet on.

My question is were there different heights to the beds and bows on each truck????

Here are some pics of the top bows as we were working on them.

Hope to get back out to her in two weeks to get some more work done on the bed.

Hi Ken
The high ones are correct but the low ones that you have are missing the piece that is in your long ones it is normally 2 pieces of about 1 to 1.2mm steel and they are pressed into a u section Then the 2 U pieces fit into each other and are spot welded together to form a rectanglular piece They look the same as the curved corner you have only straight They are called Staunchions
At about 6 inches from 1 end a bump is pressed into it and that stops it going all the way into the set frame and the other end bolts into the curved piece you have
If I had a camera I would take some photos of mine for you but it went swimming so I have to get another one when I do I will take the photos of the Jerry can holder for you as well
Cheers

The short one is part of the staunchion but has been cut off for some reason and put in the corner you can use that one as a template but make it to the length of the long one you have you can see the bump I am talking about on top of the troop seat
Cheers
