It costs just over $152.00 to fill a CCKW 40 gallon fuel tank today. (That won't stop me from enjoying theview at WWII Dow Field Hangar 1 today) Amazing how the base suddenly comes alive with vivid memories of F-51, F-80, F-84, AT-6, C-45 and B-25 activity, it is just like it was yesterday, the names of the famous WWII and Korean War Pilots are just as vivid. Hangar 1 is also the site of my B-25 flight a few weeks ago, nothing like looking out to see a P-51, FG-1D and P-40 in formation with you.

Trying to think of the character in the Vintage Video series on CCKW that was the maintenance nut. Anyone remember his name?

Here in the UK (and using U.S. gallons measure) it costs a mere $341 (that won't stop me from enjoying the drive either :P ). Always a privilege to be able to drive the GMC!

During the immediate postwar period thru the early mid 50s, CCKW's and other WWII equipment was still in use by the Air Force and still visible at Dow Field, the5 Ton 4X4 Tractors, CCKW's and the lone Chev 4X4 used by the Dow Field MARS facility (it was still in use as late as 1961) would have those electric windshield defrosters installed during the winter months. The defrosters worked great and were a popular surplus truck part. The Dow Field Salvage yard generated hundreds of these in NOS Surplus condition. Our Jeep customers bought them up as they were perfect on the CJ-2A and CJ-3 Jeeps. Mr Wentworth, our mailman, had one on his new 1953 CJ-3A.

Paul Veins (TM9 Ordnance) has a few CCKWs under restoration, one has been featured by David Doyle in one of his books.

Another use for my yard truck, pulling down dead elm trees, the limbs are starting to die and I didn't want to have it come down on the roof, that house is an original home stead from the late 1880's and that elm wood is very heavy, that ladder is 20 foot high, not a really good place to use a chainsaw, I took the hook from the winch up first and wrapped it around the branch as high as I could, then cut a relief cut on the front side then tightened up the winch cable then I cut through the back side till it started to crack at that point I just backed the truck up and pulled the branches down then cut them up for fire wood!

here is a G-503 two fer, I've been wanting to swap out the roller bumper on my M-2, with out roller, for a really nice winch bumper for a long time now and finally got started today, and since my bottle jack was going to be too slow I used the yard truck to lift the front of the half-track, only a couple dozen more big fat rivets to go! My friend an mentor William F Knight joined the US Army in 1940 and was assigned to Quartermaster Corps as a mechanic. He trained at Camp Holabird to be a mechanic and was assigned to the 30th Quartermaster Regiment. In June 1941 while the base was still under construction, his unit convoyed from Langley Field VA to DOW Field ME in their CCKW trucks in order to support bombers that were flying anti sub patrol off Maine.
Bill served 66 months in WWII US and North Africa. He went back in the service after WWII and retired as a Navy Chief.
He is still serving his country as leader of the famous Troop Greeters at Bangor International Airport, on 24 hour call and has personally met 4000 flights since 1991.
I plan to mark the doors on my CCKW cab with his 1941 Quartermaster unit.
Bill's WWII history can be found by googling William F Knight, Quartermaster. Bill had no idea that his town of Emmitsburg MD had him on their WWII Honor Roll website.
Hopefully, I will get a pic of him and my truck on here soon.

I waited too long, Bill Knight passed away on Christmas Day 2013 at the Veterans Home. Bill greeted plane flights at Bangor International Airport totaling 500,000 Troops coming and going from the middle east over the past 20+ years. He also saw that poor or disabled children got computers, electricity at their homes, cooked meals for the Salvation Army, Rang Bells for the Salvation Army, sold Dafodils to raise money for cancer. He sometimes met as many as 8 flights of troops a day, no matter the weather or hour.
He was 91.
This Spring the CCKW doors will have the pre war 1941 era markings of Co. A/30 QM Truck Rgt. that Bill Knight served with while at Bangor Army Air Base (Dow Field).

CCKW is good for what ails ya. been having a few extra aches and pains lately, went down to the barn to see how the CCKW was hibernating. It looked pretty good sitting there sleeping. I climbed up into it to enjoy a few minutes with my friend the CCKW, temptation got to me, and I fired it up just to listen to it. Aches and pains went away. Can't wait til Spring to give the locals some O.D. to look at.

And I guess this is "good-bye"... or at least for now :( I (Michael) am off for my freshman year in college tomorrow. The university has a filtered network system and probobly will not let me access online forums. But don't worry  , dad'll still be browsing the forums, but'll be a little more "quiet" without his "I.T." staff around.
