Rebuilt CCKW motor?

Post by weasel nut » Wed Mar 25, 2020 4:15 pm

Below are some pictures from a group of DUKW/CCKW parts that I picked up late last spring.

It contained what I was told was a rebuilt motor. I have no reason to doubt that. What I would like to know was this business in Orono Maine a rebuilding shop or did this company outsource their rebuilds.

Silver's Auto Parts, Orono Maine, still exists but is not the type of local auto parts store that it used to be.

Joel, know anything about these folks? The tag was on the pallet that the motor came on and was shipped on to another collector.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Bill

Their repair shop burned over 50 years ago, and their Gov't Surplus equipment mechanic Irving Leighton went into business for himself. Irving passed away a few years ago. There was a surplus parts business next door which has since been torn down and the parts scrapped.
I doubt that that engine was rebuilt at those locations.
There was a local salvage operator who had a DUKW and plenty of spares, he also passed away nearly 40 years ago. Everything is gone now, that engine looks like the spare for his DUKW.

Thank you very much for the update Joel!

I hope to scope the engine soon to take a look at the pistons and cylinders for condition.
