Is this tire iron for a CCKW?

Post by RedArrow2016 » Thu Nov 08, 2018 9:32 pm

I was told that this fits the CCKW and want to verify that it does belong with the CCKW tools. Any help would be great and thanks...

Hi RedArrow2016,

It looks like a tool that could used for removing the lock ring from two-piece rims.

TM9-801, however, does not list a tire iron in the tools section. I have always found this somewhat strange. For removing the tire from the rim, they say to use the large screw driver - which seems totally idiotic to me, as it would to anyone who has ever tackled one of these rims. Unless, maybe they somehow came apart more easily when they were new, 75 years ago.

Would be interested to hear from someone who knows more about this...

Looks like part of a number on the tag. Is the complete part number legible?

Best Regards...

Changing a CCKW tire is easy if the person follows the instructions. Many try to pry off and hammer on the lockrein contrary to the way it was meant. One gets the hang after doing it a while.
Dave Hancock made an excellent post here on G503 on changing the CCKW tires.

WOW Ben, that is awful decent of to have referred my posting about changing tires on the W.W. 2 multi-piece wheels  . Just to keep the record straight, I didn't learn the task by myself. An old W.W. 2 Veteran, Dave Arnson of Ever-Wear Tire Products of Los Angeles, taught me the proper procedure of tire changing back in 1997.
I will also admit that I always have a healthy fear and respect for the task, especially when filling the new replacement with air for the first time.

Bud Werner used to bake me cookies and send me Fruitcake. Lawrence NABHOLTZ also used to send me Fruitcake. The Army used to supply me C-Ration Fruitcake. I feel like the Cookie Monster.
