Sad day, lost my favorite coffee cup

Post by Frank USMC » Sun Jan 08, 2023 4:56 am

Sad day here, this morning, my favorite coffee cup slipped from my old cold hands, and broke.
This cup was purchased back in the early 90s at the Southern Power Wagon rally in Thompson, Georgia. It had a WC52 on it.
A vendor there was selling coffee cups, with a half ton closed cab Dodge, a WC52, and a M37 on them.
Loved that cup...
Does anyone make them any more?

Man, that's rough. I had a favorite coffee mug I used for years. Loved it. Then one morning I'm standing in the shop and the next I know I'm standing there with just the handle in my hand. Slow motion as the cup just dropped to the concrete and exploded. Not only did I lose a great mug, I lost a full mug of coffee...

Frank,
You can create your own cup at the link below.
You have to upload the picture that you want on it, and they will make it and send it to you.

This is Walgreen's site, but a google search reveals other options.
I did not compare prices, so you may want to shop around.

I feel Your pain Frank. I don't know what I'd do if this treasure of mine was broken. I bought this cup back in Feb. of '96 when I first became a member. The meeting took place in the upper parking lot of Glendale City College. I met a great group of guys and had lots of fun going to events and shows. At first I really didn't care so much about it and it lived in the glove box of my 1st. Chevy for about 11 or 12 years.
Having it there guaranteed that I'd represent the chapter with which I was a member and that I'd always have a coffee cup to enjoy awful, rot-gut lifer-juice made by some Pogue who didn't know what the correct ratio of grounds to water was. :) .

The loss of a loved one is always traumatic. Since it (the mug) will always be "with" you, try this: Get a new custom/personalized mug as described previously. Then when someone compliments you, it opens door to launch into a great Sea Story(s) about your loss. A good Marine knows how to do this. If you like the person you're talking to you can keep it short. If you don't like that person, keep going until the eyes glaze over and roll like a slot machine and they stumble away. You win either way and have fun doing it. Hope this helps ease your pain my brother.

When Frank lost his beloved Dodge truck mug I could not stand idly by and watch a fellow Dodge enthusiast suffer. An extra Dodge truck mug from our Colorado 1996 Rocky Mountain Power Wagon Rendezvous sat on my shelf, awaiting front line action. It didn't depict an open cab WW II Dodge like the WC-52 on Frank's old mug. Instead, it pictured a postwar closed cab Dodge Power Wagon, its civilian successor. But being a Dodge truck mug, I knew it was Job-Rated to dependably deliver coffee every day and would serve Frank well. So I mailed it to him early this week to relieve his suffering. Now he can properly drink coffee again.

The graphic image on Frank's mug came from a 1947 Dodge Power Wagon booklet. It wraps about 300 degrees around the mug, so it took 3 photos to show the image, which is much easier to see in person. Nevertheless, the 3 photos below should give you an idea of the beauty and ruggedness of this Dodge truck coffee mug. Frank, I hope you get many, many miles out of this mug. Drink hearty, my friend!

For the butterfingered coffee drinkers  : get an enamelled metal mug to drink from. it may be dropped and lose a chip of enamelling ( adding character / patina), but will be ready for another fill. You can also use the military issue cup that fits around the base of the water bottle (canteen).
The only thing with metal mugs is that you have to be careful when the coffee is still hot, but if you are like me, it will be cold by the time you stop tinkering and remember the coffee being there :D
And...keep the earthenware souvenir mugs for display only.

thanks,...but being an old marine I will stick with my old nasty heavy ceramic coffee mug..
Another plus on the old ceramic coffee cups I could use that sucker to take someone out if they come charging into my shop!

Hey Frank you would know about this. Buddy of mine was in Marines early 80's. Don't know all the particulars but he was assigned top a Sergeant's office and saw the "dirty" coffee urn. Scrubbed it out squeaky new clean. First brew into that the Sergeant took a sip and he said he had never been chewed out for anything else he did wrong in the corp as bad as that!

Yes, I saw that also, where a coffee cup was cleaned, that was never cleaned.
The NCOIC was very mad, and I took the side of the young Marine, because he was told to clean the office. ......maybe that is why I retired as a Staff Sergeant...Indian Word, means "Bottom of Food Chain".
