G506 5-speed

Post by M54a2 » Fri Apr 15, 2022 8:06 am

Hello and good afternoon, I am rebuilding a G506 and just getting near the 3/4 mark for completion. I ended up going with a Muncie 5-speed out of a Studebaker US6 (should be identical to the CCKW 5-speed minus the input shaft that someone swapped before me, so it bolted in just fine). I understand the jackshaft needs to be shortened to accommodate the longer transmission. What spine slider (I don’t know the correct word for it :D) has anyone used on this swap before, not sure it matters really but thought I’d ask. The G506 one is a almost twice as long.

Also, does anyone have photos of the bracket they made to mount the parking/other levers? I have a few ideas but curious to see what has been done before, thanks.

I'm "in process" with that myself. The trans I have came with a shortened driveshaft as it was in a G506 Chassis. I can take some pictures of it if that helps you. I don't have any modified brackets, so with that, I'm the same boat as you are.

Could you measure that jackshaft you mentioned? I figure I get one chance to cut it correctly to length. For the brackets, I did fabricate something up…it’s crude and needs a little work, but it’s tucked under the cab and no one will ever see it anyway

If I remember correctly, the INERMEDIATE DRIVESHAFT between the trans. and transfer case is 19 3/4" long from center to center of universal joints.

Hello, was that modified length with the 5 speed or original length? I’m in office otherwise I’d just check.

I guess information like that would be kinda useful. Right? Sorry, 19 3/4" AFTER installation of Warner Gear Division (Clark) AS T-93 5 speed transmission. I can verify in a few days by measuring mine. Please be patient, Weather Advisory for my area is rain with an outlook call for more rain. :) .

Not a problem, the weather is lousy here as well. Still below 30*…. I hit it with a tape and got 19-1/4 center Ujoint nut to transmission flange plate. I thing that slip joint will give me at least 1/2” if I’m off by a 1/4 or so.

Hopefully this works out, I’ll post some progress when it’s completed.

Sorry so late getting back to this, my driveshaft measures 19" yoke to yoke, with the slip joint completely compressed.

19” seems to be right. I had mine cut to 19-1/4 and unfortunately, this did not work. I made a decision I am not to proud of and nicked 1/4 off the splines… works now. Definitely regret it but I have a spare if need be. We shall see how it holds up. I’ll push it and if it tears it up, live, learn and rebuild. Have you looked at modifying your floor yet?
