Chevy Windshield Minutiae

Post by Tonywan Kanobby » Thu Sep 23, 2021 2:16 pm

Hey guys. How’s it going ?
I’m preparing to assemble a new windshield. I have a nos military frame and just need to order the glass, etc. and when I obtain those parts I can begin to do that. First though, I needed to remove the hinges and holdout brackets from my original frame, which I just did. Here are a few pics from that.

I was going to ask the “audience” where I might find these unique fasteners. Im speaking of the barrel nuts for the brackets and the shouldered screws for the hinges. Here is a pic of what I was able to dig out. The two shouldered screws are what I was able to recover from the hinges. The singular barrel nut there for the hold out brackets has the stud of the broken off outer screw hanging on there on the bottom.

It turns out they’re readily available. Not in the original form (that I know of) but quite workable I think. Rather than links, I have a few screenshots here.

This should work well for the hinges

I can switch the outer screw to another type if need be.
Yeah, so no big deal finding shouldered screws and barrel nuts. These are through McMaster-Carr.

If anyone has any advice or something to add please do. The screenshot images look fuzzy but I see that with my phone if I tap on them they enlarge and clear up. Hopefully that works for ya. Take care guys.

(sorry about my two follow up replies below. Was attempting to edit but instead quoted. s.n.a.f.u.)

I used the bottom ones on my truck as you plan on doing and they worked well. Fortunately, I was able to save the originals that held the hinges to the frame.

Hi Tony,

I used barrel bolts like the ones you have shown from McMaster-Carr. Unless someone has a stash of old NOS hardware, I think that is as close as you will find.

Nah. Just ordered the fasteners. They’ll be fine with a little olive drab. Will get the order going for the glass etc.

In the meantime I’ll get the cosmoline washed off of the frame sections and get those painted. Did clean up and have painted the hinges and brackets.
