1941 G-506 1st. Engine Start.

Post by D.R.H. » Sun Sep 19, 2021 6:49 pm

Hi Gents, I hope all are well and are working on something in your collection of W.W. 2 rolling stock. Saturday 18 Sept., A guy came and took my 1945 Chevy home to add to his collection. He was very enthusiastic and happy to acquire it. I'm pleased that it will be taken care of and that it will be brought to its' next level of evolution, and that is Driving and Stopping.

In this post I have 2 videos and several pictures to share of the '41. The first photo is of the truck.

I removed the exhaust pipe collar and tube. The pipe is in good enough shape to be repro'ed.

I purchased a new coil, plugs, wires and set out to clean the points to find out if the engine will give me a bark or two.
Image

After installing the ignition equipment, I made some 'hot jumper wires' and prepared to burn some liquid dinosaurs. I was amazed but not surprised at the results. I can't wait to rebuild the fuel pump and carb. and get the engine to run for a longer period of time.

I AM GLAD THAT I KEPT THIS TRUCK!!

Hello Dave,

Outstanding !!!
Great videos of the trucks.

I too am very glad you were able to keep that awesome, early 1941 Chevy !!!

That engine seems to run perfectly. Get the radiator, hoses, and coolant, set up, and she should run free again 😃😃😃😃

Best of luck with her, a beautiful truck !!!

Best Regards,
Ray

Very cool Dave... That's about as far as I've gotten with my '45, using "manual fuel injection" and a hot wire to see if/how the engine runs. It's great to hear them fire up for the first time in what probably seems like forever. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Ray and John. I have a carb. coming and a fuel pump too. I have to take what's left of the exhaust to a shop tomorrow to see if they can copy it. I have quite a bit of oil for the engine and a filter, so I'm gonna see if she'll move on her own by this Saturday. This poor old trucks' cab is severely rusted through, so it's gonna go. I have found a replacement cab, a '41 as well, and will be going to get it this Friday.
Thanks for the kind words boys!

Hi Dave,

I currently have an NOS exhaust pipe and tail pipe at the shop to be reproduced. Both are in good NOS condition, and I'm hoping to make some available if the pipe bender can work his magic. It looks like the exhaust manifold end of your pipe is missing the bell end. It is actually a short (1-1/2" long??) pipe, spot welded inside the end of the main pipe which is flared.

Hi Kirk, thanks for the pictures and update on your exhaust. I am interested in the pipe that is aft of the muffler. I have been rather busy over the past few weeks and haven't been able to take many photos of what I've been doing. The exhaust pipe in the previous photos is in great shape, however the flange has rusted away. I found a shop here that may be able to repro it, I just have to take there on my way home from work and now is the time. Also, ZippoG506 has a complete spare system that He says didn't fit too well. He did offer it to me and I will get it soon.
In the mean time, here is a video of the first official run in probably 25 years. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCZlJ_M5VHM.

Howdy Gents. I am unable to upload the 4 photos I have of the new exhaust system for this truck. There is an internal error going on right now with the Album Index. But in the meantime, here are two videos that I made over the weekend about this truck.

Hi Dave. I’m running out of adjectives to express how cool it is to see that old iron breathe life.

Will be neat to see those tires. Are they nos or are they being made in that form somewhere?

Thanks Tony and Ray. The engine is a bit on the "mechanically noisy" side. The valve lash really needs to addressed. But as 'they' say, "It's better to hear them than to smell them". There is something amiss with the photo album, perhaps I'm doing something wrong. I'm unable to upload any still photos. So, here is a link to a new video of the '41.

Hey Dave,

First starts are always fun! Once tuned halfway decently, these old 235 engines start amazingly easily. It's like they WANT to run.

Hope you have some time to play with your trucks!
