G-506 Transfer Case / Speedo Gear Question

Post by mudflap » Tue Jun 29, 2021 8:34 pm

Quick question to all you Chevy guys:

Where exactly on the transfer case is the speedometer drive gear ? ( i.e what shaft is it on ?)

I am rebuilding a spare transfer case for my CCKW. I need the speedo drive gear, GM PN 3660177. (This gear is also part of 2186838 - which is a set of both driven and drive gears)

I ordered what was supposed to be 3660177 from one of the European places, but the pitch of the gear teeth is opposite the pitch on the gear that came out of the transfer case. :(

On the CCKW, the speedo drive gear mounts on the idler shaft - which connects the two rear axle output shafts. This shaft spins in the opposite direction.

I am thinking the speedo drive gear on the G-506 transfer case is mounted directly on the output shaft, which would mean that the pitch would have to be opposite of the CCKW.

If anyone has a G-506 driveline TM or SNL that they could check, or maybe post an image, I would greatly appreciate it.

I have a sneaky suspicion that they sold me a Chevy speedo gear and if I try to use, it the speedo cable will be rotating in the wrong direction.

Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide.

Best Regards....

You’ve probably got this solved but 506 and508 are different birds. The gear for 506 comes as an assembly, p.n. C-608444,, which includes drive fitting, p.n. Cv-3660270, and the gear, p.n. Cv-3660175. It fits on the idler shaft p.n. Cv-3659530 superseded by shaft p.n. Cv-605414 all of that came from ord.9,snl g-85 for the 506. I’ve not got into the 508 yet but plan on picking up one in about a month, it’s a early 44 solid but only surface rust, short w.b. Hard to find but in excellent shape an easy restoration……Zuke
