New to me G506
Hi all, I just purchased my first MV, a Chevy G506 that's pretty rough. I've been searching around the forums for guidance on this site, others and facebook and it can be a little confusing trying to understand things base on others questions. My questions are, it has no data plates, are there other places to look for a VIN/SN? It also has a coat of yellow paint on the hood but looks like OD green underneath. Is there a safe way to remove that yellow to see if the numbers are still visible underneath? What are the identifiers to differentiate between the years? The battery box is(was) behind the cab. I can post some pictures later. Thanks!

Hey new guy and welcome to the G506 world. You will never be the same again. I hope you wife is a kind, caring and understanding sole...it will help.
Unfortunately the G506 never had a VIN # frame stamp originally from the factory. Data plates were either on the header panel or glove box depending on the year of truck.
One can tell the approximate age of a given truck by some of the subtle and not so subtle changes that occurred during the 5 year production of the WW2 G506 Chevy. There were approximately 3 significant changes during production. Check out this thread for some of the differences found:

If you can post some pictures, I am certain we can estimate a ballpark year of your new project.

Re: New to me G506
I appreciate the warm welcome! My wife is luckily pro military and pro old cars so I'm lucky there. Reading through that link a bit and some of the things I have noticed on mine in regards to that are it has military gauges and a serpentine grill. I only have a few pictures handy to post until I get more taken. There are 8 holes on the glove box door where some plates look to be missing. It does have blackout lights as well. Since I don't have data plates to know the numbers, is the best course of action to try to find some from a parts truck someone has?

Good click on Forestry4evr in his post to you above. Look at some of the trucks he has brought back from the dead. I look at his restorations as a motivation factor to keep going, and to be inspired!
Good group here that will help you when you ask.

Greetings Rucksack,
Your truck looks to be in good shape. Nice to see the Bumperettes, pintle hook and rear view mirror have not wandered off.
Great score, looking forward to following your progress.

Re: New to me G506
Unless your truck is an amalgamation of multiple vehicles, all of the identifying features lead me to believe you have either a late 1941 ZP or 1942 N-series truck. Unfortunately your pictures came out rather grainy so it is difficult to discern small features which could pinpoint series or a closer date of production.
A better SWAG could be provided with clear pictures of: 1) right side running board and cab, 2) clearer image of the dashboard including the glovebox door, 3) firewall showing the location of the main wiring harness going into the cab, 4) front leaf spring pack, especially the rear half, 5) hood hinges from the outside, and 6) engine.
BTW, the site provider has a free photo gallery site (surfacezero.com) that can be used to upload good quality images. The process is a little clunky, but if a luddite like me can figure it out, I am certain your chances of success are pretty good.
It looks like you have a great start as there are several parts intact on your truck that seem to often be missing.
Hope you have fun with your project and ask any questions...collectively we will probably come up with a good answer.
Paul

Re: New to me G506
Thanks for the information so far. It's a little intimidating but I'm looking forward to the journey of getting her back to what she should be. Some overall larger picture questions I have are, suggestions for a bed? Originals seem hard to find. Main main concern is a lack of a serial number making it harder to obtain a title. Has anyone ever run into this? I made an account on the photo page and uploaded a bunch of stuff. Let me know if I did it correctly and if those photos are helpful.

Yes. Every single serial Number tag and nameplate on my G506 was removed and missing. I went through the state and got a bonded title and a new vin tag assigned.
Every state has a different process, just gotta start digging
