Re: G-506 drive shafts
I would imagine that the u-joints are the same series (1350 i recall) on both civilian and military war period applications. I have a 1946 civilian non-synchro 4 speed transmission and the output yoke is the same as military. Keep in mind that both the front and rear driveshafts on all of the 145 inch wheelbase trucks are identical.

I believe some civilian Chevy trucks are torque tube rear ends aren’t they? I thought that’s why the transmission is the same but not the rear output area. Not sure tho, just going from memory

The 1 1/2 ton civilian trucks use an open driveshaft arrangement, at least from 1938 up.

Good to know! Isnt the transmission on the half, 3/4 and 1 tons the same minus the driveshaft output and the first gear ratio?forestry4evr wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 2:52 amThe 1 1/2 ton civilian trucks use an open driveshaft arrangement, at least from 1938 up.

Re: G-506 drive shafts
There are a lot of common internal and external parts between the civilian and military Chevy 4 speed transmissions. A friend and I chased this rabbit years ago...I don't recall the exact details, but there are some internal differences among the early transmissions 1937-41 vs 1942-47. If one digs into the specifications, the first run YP trucks had slightly different gear ratios than the rest of the ZP and N series transmissions. Overall though, a civilian 4 speed from any 1 1/2 truck will bolt up and work in a G506. The speedometer output must be blocked when using the civilian transmission in a G506.

Why does it need to be blocked ?

Re: G-506 drive shafts
Because the speedometer cable is driven from the Transfer case, and not the transmission.
