Delco Battery Questions

Post by Rustman » Tue Mar 16, 2021 4:41 pm

So it seems the Chevrolets used a Delco 19C1 Battery.

Does anyone have an original battery?

Does anyone want to see reproduction battery "toppers" that could be slid over a Napa/Tractor Supply Group 2 battery and urethane "DELCO" caps that can be glued to the top of the existing caps and cell straps?

I'll tell Rob you said hi :) Anyway yeah looking or more information on this. We do have some Delco battery caps that we can scan to get replicated, but the more details the better for something like this.

Hi Matthew,
I would be interested in a battery topper! 👍
Thanks,

Would you happen to know if that is the correct style of filler cap? We have a couple of these in the collection that can be used for 3D rendering to produce a master and mold flat bottomed caps to be glued onto the modern fill cap.

I dont think those are the right style of caps. Here are some screen grabs.
The first is a bigger blow-up from the TM9-805. The caps are removved, and lying with the tops away from the camera. Note also the cell connectors.

The next two pics are from a wartime publication titled "Our War Job" by the Delco-Remy Division - General Motors.

The last pic mentions 5 styles of Delco batteries used in Military trucks, and the one shown is a type 4H. This is the style listed as used with the N and Z model G506 trucks!

They seem to have a taller teat type cap rather than the flatter button style.

Kirk,

Thanks a bunch! It's interesting how nearly all the wartime advertisements show the flatter caps. Still looking for a physical example of one of those taller ones.

From what I've read, the flatter caps were the result of the self-venting tube being located inside the battery, requiring the plates to be shorter. The taller caps do not protrude into the battery cavity, allowing bigger plates and presumably higher cranking amps. I've been looking for a sample of the battery or caps for a while now; but so far no luck. I've read that GM, and more specifically Delco really pushed the "spiking" of any batteries turned in as cores, as they didn't want them reentering the market as refurbished batteries.

Is the correct battery for the G506 series larger than the Group 2 like in a Jeep? The 19C1 battery is a Group 2 size, but the 4H is longer. Is the battery compartment on all the G506 series able to accept the larger battery?

Thanks

See the second picture you posted above, from the TM9-805. The early 'Y' model trucks used a smaller battery. Once the battery box was relocated to the outside of the frame, the box was large enough for the larger model 4H battery.

Kirk,

Thanks that both complicates and simplifies things depending on perspective! How many of the Y model trucks are rolling around still?

Follow up question. What batteries are people actually using in their G506 trucks? What modern battery do you run?

Thanks

Check with the GM car/truck clubs that perform 'as built ' judging standards. This is an old question to those folks. The VCCA for example. I used a C-4 6 volt semi truck battery in my g-506. Newc

Group 4 makes sense since that is what is specified and what should fit. Do you remember the brand you used though? I'm curious what brands people are running. There's a couple of Group 4 battery options out there. Some have flat tops, some have raised vent caps.
