Prop Shaft G506

Post by Tonywan Kanobby » Sat Feb 20, 2021 2:11 pm

Hey guys,

How are ya doing ? For me, just hacking around as usual. Did have a situation with Olive that I paid some attention to. Thought I’d share even though it’s no big deal. Need to make a little noise

So while I usually drive around with my milled out “hub caps”, come winter or when ever I feel I want to use 4wd I install my driving flanges. They are always in the truck ready to go. Well I had the driving flanges installed but not in 4wd and was rolling down the highway and this pesky little vibration would creep in right at about 35 mph, become more vigorous at about 40, and at about 45+ would become less noticeable (of course we are getting airborne at that point, right !?).

Alright, I’ll get to the point. I suspected the front drive shaft so I took it off, and voila, that was it. Upon further review it was clear that the slip yoke and spline were done wore out. Probably 1/4-3/8 inch deflection.

Went to an old school shop back in “the old town”
and had er fixed up. Was shocked at the cost but what else could I do ? Here are some pics. Oh, and btw, the new spline measures out at about 1 1/2 inches (1.475). Have not installed yet. Hope they balanced her well.

Take care all.

Hi Tony,
Nice to hear that you're keeping that old girl in tip top shape.
IMO that's not unreasonable for what they had to do, trucks and truck parts just plain expensive.

Appreciate the comments guys.

Yeah Kelley, sometime the “squeaky wheel” gets loud enough for even me to hear it ! 😝

No doubt it’s all about the good vibrations when behind the wheel of these beauties, Duece.

Joel. What do you mean by jack shaft ? Have you got nos prop shafts ? Slip yokes ? And are they the same front and rear ? I’ve never checked.

Don't feel too bad Tony. I was helping a friend with his Scout Car. I warned him not to over-spin the engine but he didn't heed. He took it on the freeway and 'just kept up with traffic' sending a connecting rod through the side of the block. So he wanted to install a Chevy 292 with an SM 420 Trans. After spending hours at Cannon Engineering in No. Hollywood, the intermediate shaft was finally finished, the cost was about $625.00. WHEEW  .

What did he do with the brake and clutch pedals? They bolt to the bellhousing on the original bellhousing and engine.

Well Dave, that story makes my deal look good !

Not that this really applies “Doctor”, as the 292’s bell housing is the same as the V8 engines when they made that switch and of course it accepts the SM420. But I also have an SM420 with my 235. For years I had been using or storing my truck and one day I was under the rig and became horrified when I saw the weld that attached the shaft that accepts the clutch and brake pedals (see the red bell housing). Well, maybe the weld’s penetration is adequate but I found out that Jim Carter’s sold a modified bell housing for those with early Chevies that want to run the more modern trannies. So I purchased it and installed that (the gray one). I liked the separate pieces, including gussets that seemed to be modified in a more proper manner. It’s been a few years now. So far so good.

BTW, I sure would like one or two of the nos driveshafts you’ve got in the “land down under”. Will need to bring a lot of gas for my boat. Maybe this summer. Hey, wait a minute. I’ll probably run into ice at some point. Oh well.

Tony

Thanks for the pictures and explanation.

I don't suppose that the Chev crashbox has the same mounting as the tranny that you used with that 292 modified bellhousing.

I had always supposed that you could possibly flip the brake/clutch pedal shaft and make a bracket that attached to the frame.

I guess I need to dig out my Chev 292 for one of my projects now!

Driveshafts? yes I have some extras.

Joe, Do you still have that propeller shaft? I'm trying to restore a civilian 1942 Chevy 1-1/2 ton truck but I'm missing the rear section of the drive shaft. I would think that the shaft for the G506 would be identical to the one on the civilian truck.

Have you checked on the Stovebolt forums? Very likely you can find someone with the civilian driveshaft parts you're needing. The G506 has a center mounted transfer case, and thus is a different drive shaft setup then the civilian.
