W.W. 2 Tire Installation Training Video.

Post by D.R.H. » Wed Feb 17, 2021 11:19 am

I made this video several weeks because a YouTuber mentioned in one of his videos that it would be okay to weld on an already assembled wheel. I was taught by a W.W. 2 Veteran back 1997 how to properly assemble the tire, flap, tube and wheel. The steps in the video are the exact same steps I have taken on ALL of my wheel assemblies and haven't had a failure yet, knock on wood. :o :) ...

Thanks for the great video. I had my new tires mounted for my Ben Hur mounted at a shop. To worried to try myself. Not sure I would ever try to do them, but your video takes the mystery out of how it's done.

Thanks for posting the video Dave. Very informative. I myself loaded new tires, tubes and flaps into my truck, drove it to a huge truck tire company out this way and said....here. They have a big tire cage that was made specifically for these types of wheels. Not something I would even consider.

Special note: I purchased everything from Summit Racing. Tires, tubes and flaps....all new. After driving only about 250 miles on them I had a driver side blow out on a busy highway. I was doing about 50mph when this happened. Had all I could do to keep the truck under control.

The Chinese tubes Summit is or was selling split along the whole circumference of the tube. Wow, was I lucky.

Bought US military surplus tubes (very heavy rubber) and had everything swapped out. I now have driven a couple of thousand miles with no problems. Be careful when buying. Chinese junk is out there.

Thanks guys for the positive notes. I have had some experience with those Chi-Com tubes too. I had one in a tire that failed, the rubber is quite thin. I have had tubes that were made in India and they never failed. The tubes that went into these two tires were made here in the U.S., I purchased them from an eBay vendor for $20.00 each and am well pleased with them.
The best part about good, well made inner tubes is that they can be patched and will still perform like they've never been injured. Who remembers the older style patches that used the Vulcanizing method? I remember seeing a few being used when I was around 8 or 10 years old.

I remember as a kid we would patch our bicycle tubes thinking we were “hot” vulcanizing our patches by lighting the glue on fire for a few seconds, blowing that out, and setting our patches. Of course that was not the “hot” method but it still worked. 😝

Just watched a video on YouTube that had a fellow demonstrating an old school patch. Was going to link to it but the dude was so foul mouthed I just couldn’t. It’s right there if you want to search.

In the 60's I bet 8 out of 10 kids knew how to fix a bike flat. No video or book. Some older kid showed you, told you about it or you figured it out yourself with friends. A couple of wrenches, screwdrivers and a patch kit from Woolworths was all you needed. Back then, you had hours and hours of unscheduled free time that needed to be filled. Probably 2 out of 10 kids now can change a flat. Not blaming them, times change. One of the good things about today is there isn't one thing that you might need to fix or learn about that someone hasn't made a video for. No need to search through the stacks at the library when it's open, just turn on your PC and the world's at your finger tips.

I still have a small supply of vulcanizing patches that my dad had. Every now and then I use one too.
