International M3-4

Hi all,
I’m a new member as of today. I’ve restored a long line of vintage military trucks. I’ve just acquired a 1941 M3-4. I’m looking for info on potential specs, part availability, contacts of those who may have knowledge of these trucks, etc. I’m located in Maine. Thanks in advance!

Engine/transmission parts are reasonably available. Sheetmetal parts are not.
As you know its a 1 1/2 ton 4x4. Yours looks mighty short. Hopefully its the original wheelbase and not cut down.
Are the data plates still readable? With a hard cab, you may be in luck and can make them out.
I'm on the other side of the country but have a little knowledge on them. Mine is way down the line of being worked on and is much rougher than what you appear to have there.

I've owned one a long time ago. Memory is rather vague about 'em. These were almost exclusively assigned to the Marines.

My truck's previous owner took a modern 6x6 cargo box and bisected it, re-welded it, made adjustments to the tailgate and it made a very tolerable looking bed.

Brake cylinders are rather wonky looking and are obsolete. If you need to renew them, count on having some machine work done....they'll probably need to be bored and sleeved.

Just remember that most of your cab is civilian K-body when attempting to source parts for that bit.

I’ve got 3 M2-4s for sale. I don’t know what parts are interchangeable though.

Thanks guys. Yes, it is quite complete and solid, considering it’s age. I can read 75% of the data plates and can still make out the Navy serial number on the dash. It still has the original Blue Diamond engine and running gear. Haven’t dug too deep yet, but got it running and it moves well. Needs new exhaust manifold. Frame is solid, body panels are better than others I’ve dealt with.

Will definitely need brake work and a new windshield frame at minimum. Most other body work is there, except bed. A pipeline company owned it and put that 8’flat bed on it. Unfortunately they shortened the very rear frame by a foot or so. Original gages are in place.

Trying to decide if I should keep original engine and have another 30mph vehicle or upgrade to something different. Hate to break the original state of it. Curious how others have handled engine upgrades and the results??
Any input on the value of these trucks?

I may have some NOS Front Wheel Cylinders and a NOS Windshield., the rears are a "pistol" type unique only to 40's IH. One of the old time surplus dealers had a quantity manufactured. The price exceeded $200.00 Each. The M-3 did not share rear bodies with other common WWII MV's.

Repro rear wheel cylinders are available now. Spendy, but you can get them.
I toyed with repowering one as well, but unless you can find better axle gearing you can only get so fast. I know the M5H6 already has an overdrive and I believe the M3-4 does too. With the transfer case there is no room for a brownie box either.
No clue as to value. They are rare enough that they don't come up for sale enough to really gauge the value.
As for the offer of M2-4 parts, nothing would interchange other than little things like gauges or light bulbs. All running gear, frame and body parts are different.

Hi, I restored an M3-4 last year, repowered it with a land cruiser engine gearbox and transfer case. Makes for a really nice useable truck. Cruises at 55mph.

What serial number is yours? Mine is a M3L4 serial number 3011, USN reg 54503

I had my brake cylinders stainless sleeved and re sealed.

Post the serial # and I can look up what it was from the factory and which branch of the service it went to. The serial # is on the left front frame near the front spring shackle.

The serial number on the frame is 2885. No more pics yet as I have it covered up as I try to figure out what to do with it. After I got it running, I can see the engine is very tired, smoking a bit, etc. definitely thinking re-power. Thanks!

Hi Cpynchon,

A friend of mine here in Quebec has bought yesterday a 1942 International M-3-4 truck. It is rough but nothing is impossible to rebuild with patience and time. The cab is not repairable, the rust is deeply penetrate anywhere in this cab. Anyway, the civilian cab KB6 or KB7 are the same and if you see such a cab in good condition for sale in Maine, can you let me know? My friend will be interested in buying it.

Nice truck, looking forward to seeing it bought back to life.

The cabs used in the M3-4 was a D series cab, slightly different to a KB in construction but look almost the same.
