Finally home again

Post by Flyncoastie » Thu Oct 17, 2019 1:39 pm

I posted on another thread several months ago about the possibility of acquiring a K-51. After 20 years of trying it’s finally home again. Back in the late 90’s I was visiting my Great Grandparents grave sites in Brooklyn, NY. At the entrance to the cemetery, across the street my Dad and I noticed a truck we had never seen before sitting at a little old gas station. We inquired and long shorty short we brought it home. We surprised my Grandfather with what we found out to be a rare Chevy K-51 radio truck. My Grandfather has restored many Jeeps and at the time also owned a nice CCKW. We got the truck running with very little effort and planned to do a full restoration. I left that fall for my second year of college and found out shortly after that my Grandfather sold the truck. My Dad and I were disappointed but we knew who he had sold it to. After years and years of trying, we finally own it again. My cousin was gracious enough to deliver it to my Dad’s house in North Carolina where she is safe and sound in a new barn. I am currently serving in the Coast Guard and stationed in TX. My Dad and I have both restored WWII Jeeps and he owns a nice CCW. I’m due to rotate this coming summer and hope to get back to the East Coast so we can get started on this long awaited project. I haven’t seen her in person yet but here are a few pictures. It’s amazingly complete, and missing only a few parts like the spare tire carrier. I’d be interested to hear from anyone who has restored or owns one of these unique trucks. God bless!

Congrats on getting the truck back... Looks to be in really good shape. The K51's definitely have a big coolness factor to them.

Super nice looking project with most of the hard to find parts intact. Lucky you! Look forward to seeing more pictures and details.

Short update. Dad has been slowing working on the truck. The engine runs great! Front end has been rebuilt with all new brake components and seals. He currently pulling the body apart and plans to fully remove the cab. Surprisingly, everything is in amazing shape. The bottoms of the doors were toast. We recently acquired a wood Ben Hur trailer.

I've always had a soft spot for G506 trucks, but especially the K51's. Nice looking truck, and great progress so far!! :D
