The dipstick? Do you meant the tube that the dipstick goes into? Most of those Dodge engines that tube is threaded at one end and screws into threads in the block. ive seen some that are basically just a light press fit into the hole in the block. Which is yours.

Ok, reading the thread yet again, I see "Back box" is the muffler. Leave it off for now, sounds like it might be full of oil still.
Does this engine have a full crankcase ventilation system? Looking at the single picture of the carb is seems that it does. I can also see the later style oil filler/breather.
On the last run with less smoke I did not see if you tried adjusting the carb again?
we are making progress but have a little ways to go it seems. Hopefully vacuum gauge arrives soon!

Yes, back box is muffler. I guess British English gets confusing sometimes, wings, fenders, etc.
The oil dip stick slides into a tube which was welded to the side of the block. This snapped off so is now attached to the dipstick! I'm hoping maybe liquid metal might sort that? Who knows.
I did try adjusting the carb idle screw. It is now 1.5 turns anti clockwise out. Which seemed to be the place the motor was happiest running.
My oil pressure readings that appeared lower may have been contributed to the leaking hoses on the filter and gauge. Also the seal on the junior filter.
My test equipment should be here next week, as they're in the post as we speak.
I have cleaned, inspected and tightened the valve covers, and the breather. So hopefully that'll help sort a few bits. Would the now floating in a hole dipstick cause issues for loss of pressure? I guess it would?

Re: Wc54 t214 engine issues
The dip stick tubes were never welded to the blocks, this must be some sore of lame field repair. Look at the point were the tube enters the block. Any remains of a broken off tube still threaded into the block? Picture?
No, none of the dipstick stuff has any effect on the pressure.

Hi guys, and sorry for the delay!
I was sidetracked with shows and reunions.
The engine is running. Although I still need to fine tune. I have the vacume and timing light now! So have adjusted and smoke has now gone. Until I road test I cannot be that sure, but quietly confident!
I shall keep you all updated. And a big thank you for all sticking with my lack of knowledge throughout
