Chevy G506 data plate question
Were the data plates on an early Chevrolet G506 brass or zinc? If brass, when did they switch over to zinc?
Thanks, Bob

I have seen many that were neither brass or zinc but plain steel . Most plain steel are unreadable or almost . Warren Duchesne

Re: Chevy G506 data plate question
Bob,
The plates on my prewar 2/41 YP Chevy were aluminum. The plates on mid 1941-late 42 trucks I have seen were all steel with a light or no zinc plating. These later plates did not seem to stand up to time very well. I am not sure about late model trucks. It seems as though the choice of metals used on items such as data plates changed with scarcity of materials...aluminum was allocated to airplanes, and brass to shell casings when we finally entered WW2.

At the risk of mixing apples and oranges, the changes in metals for the jeep data plates are fairly well documented and I would suspect the trucks might have followed a similar evolution.

Hey John,
Do you have a link to the Jeep discussion? I had always figured the choice of metal used basically fell in line with different metal shortages that occurred during WW2. Would be interested to see other opinions and or documentation.

Hi Paul,
I use Dataplates4u as a reference: https://dataplates4u.com/willys-mb/
There’s also Horne dataplates in Poland, but I can’t find a website for him, just a Facebook page.
Hope you’re doing well.
John
