Re: International M3-4 trucks
Hello,
Thanks for posting your truck picture from France !!!
You have done an incredible job rebuilding this truck, restoring it to a place of honor
It must really get a lot of attention, being a rare truck in general !!
A very satisfying project indeed !
Have a great time in beautiful France ~~~~~
Best Regards,
Ray

Did you find the glove box lid? I may have a source for you. Also maybe some other pieces. I sold the donor I had pictured here but there are parts left over. Al Hansel 507-528-2780

Re: International M3-4 trucks
I had an M3-4 and it too had a wind, or crank-to-open, windshield. It's my understanding that the K-series cabs were the civilian design and the ability to open that windshield was a Godsend. That cab gets mighty hot.
Your emergency brake lever looks wrong to me but time has separated me from the old IH for many years so I may be wrong about that. Mine had a lever that looked like it came directly off a farm tractor. I know you've repowered yours. Let me say that Black Diamond motor had no trouble moving that truck around, even with a heavy load. What's more, the low range was absolutely, ridiculously low. I could drop that truck into 1st gear in low range and I could literally get out and walk around the truck as it idled forward, which is not something I made a habit of but it crept forward somewhat like a trenching machine.....slooooooow....like a turtle. I had the pleasure of towing a German 88 with it for the Army and everyone was rather awestruck as the old M3-4 didn't care in the least that the big cannon was back there, forwards, or backwards. A terrific truck indeed.

Re: International M3-4 trucks
Well noticed on the brake lever, as I have replaced the gearbox I had to change the lever set up on the floor.
I am curious to know What sort of speed did your one cruise at? I imagine they were fairly slow even in high range as the transfer case has a reduction. It’s one of the reasons I didn’t spend too much time looking for an original engine and gearbox as I wanted to make more useable in modern traffic. Mine will sit at 55mph all day long now.

Re: International M3-4 trucks
I cannot say as I never had mine much over 35 mph. I used mine strictly as an event truck.

Re: International M3-4 trucks
I actually talked seriously to the owner many years ago about this truck.
At the time it had a V8 conversion and a water tank or something like it on the back.
It was in New England somwhere. Mass? Rhode Island?
Anyway I ended up passing on it and always wished I had bought it!
It looked very solid and apparently being a forestry or fire Dept rig it seen good service and probably indoor storage.
It sure looks great now!

Re: International M3-4 trucks
Yep that’s the one. It had a big block Chevy with 3 speed auto! Apparently it was rapid to 35mph!
It was a good vehicle to start with as there was very little rust. The guy I got it from had put the effort in to find many of the parts that were needed as it had the wrong front end and wings when it turned up, correct bumper etc.
I have a picture of when it was in service with North Reading fire dept in Massachusetts.

Beautiful job Bodger!
I just acquired a ‘41 M3-4. I am very interested in learning more details on a variety of things you did. Can you offer up details on your drivetrain, engine, gearing, etc? Curious how you are getting 55mph out of her! Thanks!

Re: International M3-4 trucks
It has the engine, gearbox and transfer case from a Toyota Landcruiser HDJ 80. 5th gear is a decent overdrive and the transfer case is direct 1:1 as opposed to the original that had a reduction. Engine revs higher than the BD269. it has 900x20's instead of 8.25's.
Theoretical top speed is 75mph at red line but practical cruise speed is 55mph. we came back from the ardennes a few weeks back in the truck and sat at 60mph for over 150 miles as we were running late for the ferry!

Re: International M3-4 trucks
Let me add that going faster in a truck that wasn't designed to go faster may also have some additional implications, not the least of which is suspension and steering. Something to think about.
Cheers,

Re: International M3-4 trucks
And of course braking! 50mph would be ideal too end for me.
If someone is looking for a running, operational Blue Diamond engine and tranny, it may become available depending on what I decide to do.
Anyone know what axles this truck has?
Thanks
