Hi Jon,

Here is what mine look like. The bolts are 1/2-20 x 7-5/8, with castle nuts. The springs are .267 wire, 1.1" O.D. and 4-1/2" overall free length.

Let me know if you need any other dimensions or a drawing.

That's PERFECT!!! Thanks Kirk.
I only need the bolts and springs. I'm sure Mcmaster Carr has similar sized die springs.

I really like how helpful everyone is on this and other forums like it. The enthusiasm and willingness to share information on a certain passion keeps this old junk correct and rolling down the road.

Here are some photos of the Vacuum Check Valve being cleaned up. I didn't have one on my first Chevy and would always experience a slight increase in R.'s P.M. when releasing the brake pedal. It is a simple mechanism that is needed.

Here it is dis-assembled and ready to be cleaned.
Image

Here is the pipe fitting on the steel vacuum pipe that came off of my truck. The end fitting isn't serviceable.
Image

Here is my spare.
Image

18 individual parts to make up 1 component after being cleaned and ready to be re-assembled.
Image

I found 2 small holes in the spare pipe while I was cleaning the old paint off. I soldered them closed and used Steel Stick Steel putty on the pipe. I figure that if this stuff will work on a gas tank and hold gasoline, it will hold a vacuum.
Image

More photos to come on this work when I'm finished cleaning and painting. Here is a video of the valve being put back together.

Great progress Dave,
I had to use Lapping compound to clean up the seal surface on my valve, it was all pitted.

Thanks Jon, I'm making slow headway.

I have been busy working on my Chevy, doing a little bit of this and that, and a little bit of something else. Here are some photos.

First up are the black-out marker lights. They are Guide and in really good shape. I am waiting on a pair of new lenses and some other small parts, then they will be re-assembled and installed on my truck.
Image

The next photos are of the rear shocks and the passenger side inner door panel before and after sandblasting. I started with Black Diamond Coal Slag, but the uniformity of the media was too inconsistent and I kept experiencing a clog at the nozzle. I found Kleen Blast here in Tacoma. They have some really awesome media and it's really inexpensive too. Just a little over $3.00 per 50 lb. bag.

A few more photos of forward progress. After I finished sandblasting the rear shocks yesterday, I was annoyed at trying to wheel that pot blast across the grass, so I made a much need and necessary adjustment which is in the attached video. I also blasted the driver door inner panel and the 4 small lower panel that are installed in the cabin.

Image
Image

All of the sandblasted parts from yesterday and today have been primed and will be painted in the next few days. I need to clean the inside of the passenger door, prime and paint it yet and I have cleaned and primed my spare window bottom rail and surround channel for said door. I have one for the driver door as well and it'll be cleaned up too. Then I can install ALL of the prepped metal for both doors and be finished with that evolution!!

A few more parts that have been primed and painted. Getting closer to the end.

Image

In this photo, a small hole can be found in the driver door panel just under the time stamp. I modified this panel for the thumb turn "T" handle that is screwed to the civvy locking door latch. Now that these items have been restored, I can fit them into the driver door and finish it. I have a civvy locking door latch for the passenger door as well and it will be installed in a few days.

Thanks for looking.

Hi Gents, yesterday and today I spent some time working on the rear shocks for my Chevy.

After having painted them several days ago and bumping my head on them more than twice, They were hanging from the rafters in my little shop, it was high time that they were put back onto the truck.
Image

The rubber grommet in the link arms were so worn out that I was able to pull the pins out with my hands. Not good. An "off the shelf" push in type grommet won't work because the ends are barrel shaped.
Image

I purchased new 2 to 1 ratio 2 part Poly Urethane cold pour rubber to make new bushings. I had great success in making new rubber for the bogie wheels for my Weasel, I thought I'd try my luck with the link arms. I still have enough black pigment to do the job.
Image
Image

I sandblasted the inside of the ends to give the rubber a good surface on which to bond. Then after polishing the end of the link pin on my grinder, I applied a bit of parting wax to them. This will prevent the rubber from bonding to the pins and allow them to rotate slightly in the bushing.
I mixed up a bit of the rubber, pigmented it black and made the pour. I then inserted the link pins and cleaned up. The pot life of the rubber is about 20 minutes and total cure time is about 24 hours. Since the pins point in opposite directions, I am able to do 1 end at a time. I'll do the other ends sometime tomorrow evening.

Thanks Kirk, I appreciate your comment. I'm just having fun for the love of the trucks, you know. I'm going finish the link arms today and am hoping that this trick work out well. If it does, I'll put the word out and see if anyone else needs their bushings replaced. I'll have an awful lot of the compound left over that I don't want to see go to waste so I'm willing to do it for free.

Keep me posted, as I just about ordered materials last night to do mine, after watching your video. They (RAM) have a location up in Chicago too.

My truck time came to a screeching halt two weekends back. I was in the garage working on the truck, and took a nasty spill. I badly dislocated my left shoulder when I fell. Fortunately I had the presence of mind to protect my head, and didn't loose consciousness. I had just lit my cutting torch before I fell, but was able to shut both tanks off before heading in the house.

The shoulder seems to be in prety good shape, but I am left dealing with some nerve damage that has got me pretty grounded...

Just counting my blessings, as it could have turned out much worse! SAFETY FIRST!

GOOD GOD KIRK, D@MMITT !! I'm happy to hear that you didn't bonk your noggin like I did 2 years ago. I'm sending up some prayers for you my friend. Wowee!! Need I recommend that You NOT do that again please ! Get some rest Kirk and feel better.

Okay guys, I checked on the connecting arms today and am extremely pleased with the results. I am going to put it out there to my fellow Chevy owners. If your truck has the same connecting rods on your rear shocks as my truck has, AND if your grommets are shot, I'LL FIX YOUR CONNECTING RODS FOR FREE WHILE THIS BATCH OF RUBBER LASTS. You pay shipping from and to your home. My reason is that I would rather give it away than to have it go bad on my shelf.

Here is one end of both rods after I had time to clean the overspill off with my bench grinder.
Image
Image

And here I have poured a new batch and inserted the pins. The REAL test is how the grommets will react to the constant up and down motion that the road conditions will induce.
Image

Tomorrow, I will dodge the rain drops and get these connecting rods installed on my truck.

Here is another video of the results of yesterday and today's work with the P. U. rubber.

Okay, the next few photos will wrap up the rear shocks, links and rubber.

I cleaned the threads and put a small drop of oil on them.
Image
Image

There is a very small amount of space between the axle housing and the lower mount on the driver side. It's a bit difficult to get the open end of the wrench in there let alone the box end. So I tightened them up on the bench.
Image
Image

I inserted the upper pin into the torque arm on the shock, tightened the nut down and the anchored the lower mount to the "U" bolt.
Image
Image

Finished! :) Now the ride won't be so bumpy as the truck is driven down the road...

Front Bumper Time guys !!

The guy I had purchased this bed from had cut this rectangle hole in the bumper to accommodate a warn 5,000 lb. electric winch.
Image

I patched the hole with some 1/4" steel and the rest of the photos are just of it after cleaning the paint off.
