The history for G-506 registration numbers may be the same as those on the G-508 which started off with 4" and switched to 2" in late 42 or early 43. Bryce Sunderlin explained it in his series on CCKW in Army Motors, years ago..

Colors change over the years due to the chemical change in their make up.
Whether covered or not.

What color are the numbers under your hood?

Unless they're painted over, there are no numbers under the hood. Where would they be?

Best to go by the color of the factory painted USA, in Kelly's case it is the larger numbers with the "W" prefix.

How can you say for sure that 70 year old paint, that was exposed to the elements and repainted over multiple times is the same color that is was when it was painted as new???
