Brass is not all that bad, but is it necessary. The originals ar 60-70 years old and usually have suffered from zero PM while wasting in the weeds. Steel will last indefinitely in engines that get regular cooling system PM.

Hey Farrell trucks looking good your moving along at a good pace. On the color of the bell housing mine way OD and my oil pan was OD. Not sure if correct but when i cleaned the bell housing and oil pan it had OD under the oily build up. Unless you get a good picture i would stay with what you have. Phillip

Gray was the factory color Chevrolet trucks of that period used on Head, Base, and Pan.

I spent some time this morning straightening out my spare tire carrier hinges. They were cock-eyed, but the press made easy work of them.
At my previous rental house, it sat on about 3 acres. On the side where I parked my stuff, a garage had burned down with everything in it years before we got there. When we moved, I cleaned up my parking area, and took anything that might cause a fuss with the landlord, and tossed it in my Ben-Hur trailer. Apparently I picked up a steering wheel puller, because I found it in my Ben-Hur while looking for stuff. The thing at the end comes off by backing out the set screw.

Got my spare tire carrier stripped, primed, and painted. I put a few heavy coats of O.D. on it, so I'll let it sit till next time I can work on it. Next will be mounting it to the frame, which will require some cutting and welding of the hinge plate. I'm going to simply graft it onto what's left of my trucks original hinge plate.

This morning was nice cool weather, so I was able to put in some work on the truck. Got what was left of the old rivets popped out of the frame, and cut the donor hinge plate to size. Once bolted to the frame, I cut a V notch and welded it to the original bracket. This was a bit tricky, as I had to lay on my back to weld and grind it. Not as smooth as I'd like it to be, but it is a strong weld, and the paint should hide some of the imperfections.
Next was fitting the carrier to the hinge. I discovered that the original center hinge piece was rolled out a bit, and the carrier would contact the corner of the plate, and stop. There wasn't really a way I could find to roll it back in, so I used my tanker bar to bend it in a bit so the carrier would clear the plate. Once I got that fixed, everything assembled together pretty easily. I just need to get a center stud and this thing is done.

Found a powder coating shop pretty close by with really good rates for sand blasting. I collected my sheet metal parts, and will take them in Monday to be blasted. He's pretty backed up, so it might be three weeks before I get them back.
I ordered a set of body mounting pads from Chevys of the 40s. Unfortunately, they aren't even close to the original pads. Half the thickness, and they don't seem to be vulcanized, which means they'll crack and fall apart in a few months. Finding a good repro set of these has been annoying and fruitless. I'll probably have to make up a set on my own.

Hi Farrell. On the mounting pads, I was wanting to post a question in regard to those, but haven't because it seemed so elementary. But maybe it's not, as durability is obviously crucial. I'll be interested to hear your solution to that. Yeah, all of mine are toast naturally. Was thinking of taking old truck tire sidewall to the table saw but that's just the wannabe bubba in me. Sheesh !

Hi; On pads... Old or new industrial conveyor belt is really tough. found at quarries and factories/sawmills ect. I used to be a 'beltman' and there are lots of remainents around. I even have a bit of new stashed for future projects. Newc

I had the different cab cushions for my CCKW made by an industrial rubber supplier. They duplicated the originals exactly.

Searching online for a more suitable set of cab mount pads, I found these rubber pads on ebay. They are intended to insulate motorized shop equipment from the floor, but the cloth impregnated rubber not only is superior in design to the COF pads I bought, but are also more cosmetically correct. They are also vulcanized, and will last a really long time!
These come in 4x4x1 inch squares, so I had to cut them down to size. I initially started with a sawsall, but found a sharp blade of a box cutter to be way more effective and efficient. The blade wouldn't reach the center, however I found a few smacks with my axe splits them apart. One square will yield two 1/2" pads, and the center hole is already the correct size. I ordered a set of four because I didn't know how many I'd screw up trying to make a set, but my first try came out pretty good. If I do a second set, they'll probably have cleaner cuts, but being that they'll sit under the cab, I'm not at all worried how they look, rather they'll be perfectly functional.

Hey Farrell, keep an eye on the way the right and left side front mounts are stacked together, I was surprised to look at the mounts in the service manual I have and the front two are assembled different, maybe its to help with the frame torque flex...
It was kinda funny to me also with the 2 "U" shaped springs at the rear underside of the cab, I don't recall ever seeing a cab held onto the chassis that way, but it must be another quick wartime General Motors Idea to let the cab and chassis flex during cross country movement over rough terrain.
Keep an eye on the left/front mount rivets. One of my factory rivets sheared off, but the head of the rivet is stuck in the angle bracket hole so tight I can't whack the head of the rivet out of the bracket with a drift. The other is still in the frame and egg shaping the other hole in the angle bracket. I should have fixed it when the cab was off but I got lazy. My cab still leans to the left slightly.
