This is the frame SN from a cargo truck I'm storing/moving. It wears the hood number USA 3125883. Dog house is gone, as is the original power plant (side distrubutor block with "oval FoMoCo" valves, so 50"s vintage civilian block suspected.

The question is, does the SN and the Hood number "match"?

She is rough, but the intent is a restoration. Owner will need parts.

If anyone has requests or questions, I can snap photos easily, and it'll help ID missing items too.

The hood number and the frame number will not match. The frame number is the serial number. The hood number was assigned by the unit that used it and is usually called the registration number. There is also a serial number on the transmission that should match the frame. There is no serial number on the engine.

If you send me your address, I have a DVD of all of the pictures of my restoration that should help you. Free. Also, don't forget Raccoon Creek Restorations. He's the man.

Bill, thanks. I'll send my address via PM. I understand that the registration number and SN won't match, I guess I stated wrongly... I hope there's enough info to be able to determine if the hood number (and therefore the hood itself) is original to the vehicle wearing the serial number I mentioned. The hood number is pretty early, so if the serial number is equally early, that would be fantastic. I know GPW's, not GTB's, so I read this thread with interest.

hi!

the USA number 3125883 belongs to the first Group of trucks (6000) with a cargo body (3123238 to 3129237)

yours is roughly the 2645th of this batch.

I have a GTB registered with the number USA 3128879, and serial number GTB 137928...they are both original to the vehicle... if you do your math, comparing mines and yours, you'll probably find that there's a difference of 1990 numbers on frame, and 2996 numbers on reg,... which makes unlikely the matching of the two. my .2 cents only...

Where would the engine serial number be located on the bell housing? I can't seem to find it

yes, obviously.

Ford used to stamp engines as soon as they were delivered into the frame.

Ford GTB is a "matching numbers" vehicle - exactly like a GPW - where engine, frame and dataplate all have the same number (when originally leaving the factory).

...anyway, I think that, for skeptics, images can better support my statement... 8)

Thanks for the pictures. Duane has a early first contract GTB. If you'll re-read some of our posts, there's a bit of info and a few questions. We have a hood number, we found a frame stamping. The engine is a non-military replacement of the same model it's supposed to have, so in theory the bell housing wouldn't have required changing. I think he's trying to figure out how much of a soup sandwich the thing really is.

Can one observe the bell housing stamp with the engine/bell housing in place?

lt.luke, I think here's nothing to discover here.

engine number was NOT on the block itself, but on the bell housing instead.

if you go changing the engine, bell housing should follow that engine. if not, are you making a mess in the Ford's perfect organisation...

I don't know the meaning of early first contract GTB ... mine is one the 6000 truck produced under the first contract to the Army.

and, yes, you can a little bit hardly look at the bell housing number if you take out the engine cover (but the number is underneath the cabin floor panel).

I have to think to disagree. We found a truck with confirmed USA number "3125883 (S on the cowl) and have confirmed that the SN GTB-137928 is present on both the frame AND bell housing. The dog house is long gone.

In your earlier post you stated a belief that the math didn't add up and the registration number didn't go with the serial number. I think the evidence points the other way, that simple math cannot be used to determine a registration number/SN match based on Ford's awesome organization. I think evidence shows that while Bubba has had his way with this truck, the hood, frame (such that it is) and bell housing have been together with the remaining tin work since they left the factory. Thoughts?
