Another G-506 Hits the Road

Post by zippog506 » Sat Jul 25, 2020 5:18 pm

After a 7 year restoration process, finally the light of day hits my truck. I built the truck in a 7-foot door garage. As the picture shows, I had to dolly up the wheels to get it out the front door. Kind of novel being able to almost step foot in the cab without raising your leg.

About a half inch clearance underneath the door. Actually rubbed the weather strip on the way under. The car shows would love the truck sitting at that angle, but fortunately it's a one-time deal.

The truck is back on the wheels and you can see how much damage it would have done to try and clear the door. Got the front wheels on and drove it the rest of the way out of the garage and into the alley.

Enjoying its first day outside, basking in the sun after 7 years.

Really enjoyed the long awaited drive, but had to cut it short because of a couple little brake line fitting leaks, didn't want to take any undue risks.

Thank you to everyone on the G for all the help from posted pictures, phone calls, conversations and especially to Paul (forestryforever) for his above and beyond help with my front and rear axle rebuild. Without such, I would still be struggling. Thank you, Paul! Next comes finishing off the wood for the crossbows and uprights and getting canvas. Also taking care of a couple of small hydraulic leaks in the brakes. Until then, regards, Dave.

Another BEAUTY!! Maybe it took 7 years but that's one nice rig brother. Love all the detail you put into it. So, the big question is......is it going to live outside from here on or do you have a larger garage to store it in? All in all, nice job!!

hello Travelfix, thank you for the very kind words. I have an attached two car garage on the front of the house that I was able to have an 8' door installed a few years back, so there is room for the chev next to my 51 M-37, that I restored before starting the chev. My back garage is finally going to get the long long overdue cleaning it so needs.

Dave,

The first drive is always a memorable event. I hope you enjoyed the day!

Your truck looks fantastic in every detail! After a few shakedown runs I bet that the only additional images we will see of your Chevy is from behind the drivers seat. Enjoy the journey!

Dave, You should be VERY proud! The truck looks absolutely amazing.

Will probably have to do the same trick clearing the door with my truck when the time comes. :D

Hi Dave,
What a Sweet ride! I'll bet it didn't even look that good when it was brand new.
I really don't think 7 years is an unreasonable amount of time, Congrats!

Now comes the phase of double clutching, grinding gears as you miss a signal and have the the RPMs wrong...

It will be Outstanding Being under way on the Hardball with the "G.I." air conditioning on and the windshield up!

It's not a Fast-mover, but it is an Outstanding example of American Engineering that you have the responsibility of maintaining for the next 100 years.

Dave, I see you have a lube chart tucked in the passenger door. Would love to get one. Is it one that you've had for 7 years or a recent reproduction?
