Clarrie, the immigrant M2A1, gone downunder!
Good morning,
I am a new M2A1 owner. Never had a tracked vehicle before.
Not too sure where to start, but 'Clarrie' has already had extensive quality work done and is driveable.
I'd like to fit the rear armor, but am clue-less about several things:
- sizes and arrangement of the angle iron that fixes the vertical plates to the track armor and at the rear corners.
- Detailed pictures of the attachment of the rear steps. I have seen them somewhere, but can't find them now.
- size, style and source of the correct-ish bolts to attach the lid hinges in the rear compartment where the seat bases go (I think). They seem to be 7/32" or No.12 UNC/F ?
Also:
- size and style of the bolts for the drivers/passengers floor plates.
Is there such a thing as an illustrated parts list? I have the ORD9 G-102 Parts list, but it seems to not include the rear armor/fittings at all, and is disappointingly short on illustrations throughout.
Have I been spoilt by my very good DT969 Parts List?
Yes, I will post pictures sometime.
Sam, downunder.

Congratulations on your M2A1 Sam, downunder! I have the same model and can help you with picures, measurements, etc. Also, there's a ton of info over on halftrackinfo.com. PM me with a list of your needs and I'll get it down to you as soon as I can.

Re: Clarrie, the immigrant M2A1, gone downunder!
Good morning,
Strangely, the silence has been deafening.
Could someone please advise me on the correct (or closest available) bolts/nuts to hold the front floor in place?
Also, the correct (or near correct) bolts to attach the hinges for the passenger front seat base and the rear long storage bins lids that are also the seat bases for the rear personnel seating, . . . please?
Looking forward to tapping into the vast knowledge base that I know is among you all.
Have a nice day.
Sam.

Re: Clarrie, the immigrant M2A1, gone downunder!
Anyway, as promised:
Except for the pulpit, I have all the armor, a mixture of original and repro.
As mentioned above, I am in need of advice for when I come to assembling it.
Enjoy.
Sam.

Re: Clarrie, the immigrant M2A1, gone downunder!
Nice looking half-track! Steve Pedersen sells the screws and folded tinnermans for the floors on ebay. Item #233560651747. The co-driver seat hinges on mine are secured by 10-24 slotted round-head screws with square nuts. The hinges for the troop seats in mine have screw holes but are tack welded. I hope this helps.

Re: Clarrie, the immigrant M2A1, gone downunder!
Good morning,
Thanks for that Jon, sounds like the round heads are the way to go. I may have them on-hand.
The ebay information comes up blank .
I made a casual start on the Rear steps parts that I have been able to identify in my parts collection.
After a fairly unsuccessful internet image search, I discovered that there is more than one design for the M2A1 rear steps. . . . . ooo kaaaay.
The arrangement of the parts is by no means straightforward. So after several trips between the workshop and computer, I sort of worked out how it goes together. First problem was that the bends were a couple of degrees different. Yes, that makes a lot of difference. Before fixing that, I needed to determine which bend was correct and which needed some attention, then how to reshape the 1/4" plate. This is what I managed to do.
But then it went too far, so I needed to bend it back a bit, a different setup in the press. The blue arrow shows the cheap plastic angle gauge that I used to good effect.
Next was how the triangular end plate fitted on the straightened plate. Again, back and forth between the workshop and internet before I sorta decided that a slot needed to be cut as shown below.
That then allowed the first test assembly to happen. The red arrow shows where the slot is located.
It all seems to be OK at this stage. There are many holes to be accurately drilled. That will take some thinking and marking out.
So far, so good.
Does anyone have answers for the other questions I asked up-thread. . . . . please?
Have a nice day.
Sam.

Sam - I pasted that number in the ebay search box and they come up. 30 correct screws and nuts for $45 USD. Steps are looking good! Paul Jacobs here in the U.S. is a great source for many excellent reproduction parts you may need. He goes by Superjeep on here.

Re: Clarrie, the immigrant M2A1, gone downunder!
Thanks for that, Jon.
Email sent. I did find the screws and clips, after searching Ebay USA instead of Ebay Australia!
I bought all the missing armour plates from Paul before shipping 'Clarrie' to Australia. They seem to be high quality items.
At this stage, I am just playing with the new toy, as I have other more pressing jobs demanding my immediate attention. But I would like to get the basic armour in place to ease storage space and improve the "impression ratio"!
Another question: I can't get the new muffler to fit into its' place in the chassis adjacent to the transfer case, it is too long to clear the diff by about 2". Is this a common problem? What am I doing wrong?
Have a nice day.

Sam, As mentioned before join the halftrack.info forum, lots of good information there as well as several restoration threads. Also the White Halftrack Enthusiast group on Facebook has lots people on it. There are several folks Downunder restoring Halftracks that you might be able to network with. Good luck

Re: Clarrie, the immigrant M2A1, gone downunder!
Hi Don,
I have joined halftrackinfo forum, but was a bit surprised at the small number of posts in some areas, exhaust being one of them. But then, I haven't actually made a post to ask the question there. I did see the measurements posted, so I'll measure up my new muffler and see what I have got.
I have posted on the twitface page you mentioned. Thanks for the lead.
