I’ve tried various methods of releasing tension on the idler so I can remove the tracks, but
none seem to work very well and it’s always a fight to get the tracks off and on. What is the best way to compress the idler springs?

Re: REPLACING HALFTRACK TRACKS
If you have a double coil spring then there is a couple of ways to do it. you can loosen the lock nut for the idler stop bolt (behind the idler) then tighten the idler stop bolt until it pushes the idler foward releasing the tention on the track. or you can back off the lock nut on the adjusting nut and then back off the adjusting nut(the nut closest to the coil spring), this moves the idler foward releasing tention on the track. don't forget to remove the top roller and outer flange on the idler. worked well for me the last time i removed both tracks by myself.

Thanks for the response. My tracks are tight so the spring pre load nuts are already backed off. I will have to run the stop bolts in I guess.
