Curiosity has got me wondering, Dave.
I drove an M-113a1 in two different units I was with. Vietnam and Ft. Hood. Actually, Ft. Hood was an M-125a1 Mortar track.
Both had V-6 Detroit Diesel engines. The older M-113 had small block Chevy and Chrysler gas engines.
The Detroit was much more powerful.
Now I am reading M-114s went back to Small block Chevy gas engines.
Wonder why the Military did that ???
Just curious.

M-114/M-116 all had the Chevrolet 284 (With H.D. Truck Block) and 4 Bbl Holley. Late in life some 350's were installed. Army cut off further procurement of spares in 1973 per General Abrams. The M-114 was produced by Cadillac. There was nothing special about the 283 except that the heavy Duty Truck block can be bored out to create a 327.

My thought on reboring a 283, if I went to all the trouble to remove a 283, I would be looking at replace it with a 350, 4 bolt main truck engine. Should be a bolt in and I would think a better, more powerful engine.
If you can find one. At one time, the opinion was, there were so many, they would never get scares, but they are.
I have one, and plan to keep it. Now all I need is a track to put it in.

Back in the day, the new spare engines were surplused at Barstow and went for as little as $75. They were complete with ignition and needed no prep. Complete. The ones I had were in wooden crates. Apparently for a rebuild program, as they were not in sealed cans. A guy named Buxton was selling them back then.

Small possible historical rumor: The carb was supposedly the same model the Corvettes used, so these were pinched on weekend drills by those that wanted to up their personal rides, some swapped whole engines from what I heard, but that would be a little more work there.

Maybe so, but the Carburetor body was configured for the Holley CentriVac Governor similar to that on the M-35 and M-211 REO and GMC 2-1'2 Ton Truck.

This was from a book Tom Berndt wrote. The M-114 portion had a lot of imagination.
