M16A1 Purchase

Post by dirt71 » Sun Nov 21, 2021 4:26 pm

This is how it happen's right? I was out in south Alabama a couple of week's ago buying some M series part's for my M125 10 ton and stumbled upon this just sitting doing nothing. It's an M15A1 converted to an M16A1 in 1952, all original armor, roller was cut off :( but run's and drive's... hell the brake's even work!! Engine run's very well and is running off of the original fuel tank. Made a deal with the owner and went back this past week and picked it up. I'm excited to have it...don't know a whole lot about halftrack's but Clint here on the sight is a good friend of mine and with talking with him and sending picture's he helped me with pulling the trigger on making the purchase. I owned an M3 some year's ago and away's regreted selling it.

It’s interesting that it has top bows and footman loops. M16A1s didnt have either. Maybe they were added later.

The former owner was an MVCC old timer and I think he probably did that to give it the M3 look. It's a really nice find. It has a home made pedestal mount mounted like an M3 has.

What are your plans? It’s an awesome starting point and wouldn’t take much more than a Maxson mount and rings to take it back to an A1. Paul Jacobs made some nice Rollers and brackets if you wanted to refit one.

Re: M16A1 Maxon mount haltrack spacers

I have a correctly sized set of 1/4" steel plate parts that just needs a tank mfg roller to make the 'rings' for the two spacers for the Maxon..... Has 4 rings with proper holes drilled for the Maxon and four long correct narrow strips to make the 4' diameter rings (two different heights). $390 fob ABQ....Hey Kevin - know anyone else that might want these....need a home, cleaning out the shop!!!!! Can deliver to Phoenix gun show or north to Denver, will fit in a pickup bed.
Some assembly (and welding) required

You had better buy the wife something nice for Christmas!

That's a beauty of a find, by the way.

Hello,

I have a similar halftrack, rebuilt by the same company, and also an M15 model. It is an Autocar, as yours should be as well, being an M-15 originally.
The autocannon was removed likely at the time, and replaced by the quad set of .50's.

Keep us posted, looks awesome !!

Best Regards,
Ray

So I got to cleaning off all the layer's of paint off the frame and realized the frame# actually read's M16A1-877 looking for any input I can get on this.

AFAIK, all M16A1s were conversions so this isn’t the original frame number. Perhaps you can find another number, it may be very faint.

I’ve been looking some more and it looks like the number is original but the 5 over stamped with 6.

My M16A was an M15 in its first incarnation.......but the M16A1 did have a ONE TOP BOW - right behind the cockpit....and it essentially had a tonneau cover over the driver-co driver space. I know, I have one and a canvas cab cover to match.
