Engine problem, mystery part in oil pan.

Post by Ed G » Fri Jun 07, 2019 5:21 pm

Hi , I need some information on halftracks. I have never seen the inside of my engine, but I know I need to drop the oil pan. The reason is that I just did an oil change and after the oil drained I looked into the drain plug hole and saw something inside there. It's metal, rather large maybe 3" by 4" and 1" thick. It slides around when I push it . Could this be a screen or a part of the oil pickup in the pan? Have they been known to come apart? The vehicle still has great oil pressure but I need to correct this. I also need a gasket. It looks like I could make one if I can't find one. Is a manual available that would show the details of the White 160AX? Thank you for your time.

Ed,

Oil pan gasket is very easy to make. A tip i received was to use a 30-06 cartridge to punch the bolts holes and it works perfectly. NAPA has the right cork/rubber gasket material and I had mine made in about 20min.

As for the piece of metal in the pan; I have no idea!!

Let us know how it goes.

It’s the pickup screen.

It has to be the oil pump pick up screen. There is nothing else that can be that large and have the engine run.
The other item that can fall off is the rear mail drip tube.

I have NOS pick up screens sealed in the box from White Motors in stock, $22.50

I have a complete engine parts inventory plus a warehouse stocked with nos and used parts

Thank you, Jillian

Jillian, I went ahead with the oil change as I knew the engine still had good oil pressure and the fact that my grandkids and their friends were waiting for a desert ride. When I drop the pan I will check to see if the screen will stay put .If not I will place my order for a new one.Thank you for your response. Ed.

I sell new made oil pan and side cover gasket sets. I have one left in stock. I also sell new made engine overhaul gasket sets and transmission/transfer case gasket sets. These are made to order items. Call me if interested, 541-914-2916.
