Re: WW2 Bicycle Data - Sticky
Johan, in reference to the rear fender reflector, is the metal or aluminum outer ring painted black or just corroded and dirty in the picture you sent? Or maybe OD?

Johan,
The hole in the handlebars is to hang them when they had chrome plating. The hole would still be there on painted bars to use when dipping in the paint tank.

Won this picture on EBAY(of course this is the EBAY photo). The envelope showed up empty and the flap was not even glued down. Oh well. The seller gave a full refund including shipping.

WW2 Bicycle Data - Serial# questions
Hello Group.
Wanted to thank every body who has posted in this section, it has been very informative and help full. I was given a early 40's Columbia frame by my grandfather a few years ago and stored it until recently. I have the original (as far as I can tell) crank & skip tooth sprocket, rear hub & rim, frame, forks, struts, seat post, and a badge that may or may not have come on the bike. I have always been a big fan of Military Vehicles and gear and after seeing some of the bikes on this site and others I now I want to restore my bike to the way it would have looked on its way to Europe. I understand my bike is probably not a authentic mil issue so wont be as valuable but still want to honor the era, war and the men and women of the time by making it as close as possible. I saw this site: http://www.theliberator.be/militarybicycles.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; "A European Owned Huffman" and noticed how similar my bike is in almost every way. Even the serials are are close... But after scratching away some paint noticed a few stampings I cant find any info about. Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Here's some pics and I have the orig full resolution which I will put on Flickr or something.... If anyone knows what the other stamps are of, or mean please let me know..

Re: WW2 Bicycle Data - Sticky
That looks like an early 1940's F-Serial Numbered Columbia Made bike....
Yes, it looks similar to the Militay Contract frames.
Good Luck on the restoration/recreation...
Cheers,
Johan

Re: WW2 Bicycle Data - Sticky
Hi Johan... Do you have any idea what the third set of numbers would be?? Ive looked everywhere and the only thing I have seen that remotely looks like the Square before the #1668 is from Military Insignia regiment badges but I dont think thats the case here.... Any help would be great.....
That's 3 sets of numbering on the BB:
H7
F128070 &
1668 Preceded by a square or diamond shaped stamp with a line from the bottom left to top right corner.

Re: WW2 Bicycle Data - Sticky
The H7 is a factory assembly or inspection mark as can be found on most bikes of the era... (letter and number combo)
The F number is the frame's serial number.
Sorry, I have no idea what the third number would be. Maybe some others do

Re: WW2 Bicycle Data - Sticky
I would have to say that it would be a shame to repaint a bike with what looks to be such a good original finish.

Re: WW2 Bicycle Data - Sticky
Doug I would totally agree,, But its not original paint.
My grandfather bought a old store/collection of bikes from Ohio and brought it back to CA most of the bikes were in good original shape, this frame was a rust bucket, so he had it painted to match what he thought would have been the correct colors from the era..... Going to the SoCal Bike Swamp meet to see if I can find some fenders.... and ask about the 3rd serial number....Also I have original Whizzer rims with bendix hubs for sale or trade for???????

Re: WW2 Bicycle Data - Sticky
Does anyone know the treatment process the frames and other parts went though from the manufacture before being painted OD?? i.e. were they parkerized, if so was it the black finish similar to parts off of Indian and Harleys of the same era? or was it a primer?

Re: WW2 Bicycle Data - Sticky
Not to be rude in anyway (so please don't be offended), but IS this not a WW2 Bicycle Sticky
and not a ..."How do I mock up my non original to look like a military issue"?
It may just be my opinion...(I know everyone has one), but this topic would probably be
better served outside of this sticky.
