Stopping primary oil drip on WLA

Post by David V » Tue Aug 13, 2019 6:29 am

I took all the thin washers off the automatic oil feed to my rear chain years ago. The chain is modern and pre-lubed. It doesn't need it.

Now I have lot of oil dripping from the primary chaincase after use even though I have already taken off all the thin washers. There is only one thicker washer left. Talking to another WLA owner last month he told me he has also taken that off to shut down the oil drip totally as he thinks due to the amount of miles he does a year on his bikes, there is no real need to lube the primary chain like that. I tend to agree with him but what do you that guys ?

We were talking about putting a belt drive there instead of the chain but he says they tend to stretch unevenly if left unused for a while. So I've gone off that idea.

You don't have a weaping oil pump? The oil will run right out of the primary breather or other places not sealed after running because the check balls in the oil pump are not shutting off fully after running and oil from tank is draining down into the cases.

A friend tried the drive belt and did not have success with it he said he couldn't get it to run true.

Hello;
I have a lot of friends who ride with the belt kit in France and Europe and no particular concern with.
I just installed one on a 43WLC, then on a 42WLA my brother to avoid these recurring problems.

Serge

So I guess if I cut off the oil feed totally by taking out the thick washer if there is anymore oil dripping it will be because of a weeping oil pump ?
I could try that just to see.

Is the needle end too short or missing on the end? Then as said remove the last washer and Try?
On a weeping oil pump it will leak after the bike is shut off and not running and puke oil on the ground.

Well here's a picture of the screw. Doesn't look like the end is broken though. I could take off the thick washer and put some thin ones on.
And a pic of the oil pan this morning. I find there's a lot of oil in it.
I think I'll run around the block without the casing on and watch what happens.
Obviously I can't check the check balls without draining the tank and taking the pump off.

Wow that is a lot of oil ! Clean cover of oil and remove thick washer from screw and use a thin washer and give a try. I can read in the manual and see what it says to do?
The screw looks ok!

Actually this is not a lot of oil - this is what was left in the casing after the oil had been dripping for 5 minutes ! There was quite a puddle.
Well I took off the thick washer to shut it down totally and went around the block to check.
No oil weeping out at all so I'm thinking no trouble with the check balls.
So I've put back 4 thin washers which are not even half the big washer thickness. I'll check to see if what's happening after the next ride because I would like to have some lube on the primary chain. Just a bit.

I checked the needle out on line and it's OK.
