A Second World War amphibious vehicle that was buried 30 feet beneath the Cambridgeshire Fens has been excavated by a team of volunteers.

The 26ft-long LVT-4 tank, which was one of 16 brought in to act as a flood defence in the village of Crowland, during the 1947 floods, was uncovered by residents who spent five days digging the lands beneath the Cambridgeshire Fens.

The Buffalo military tank, which weighs 20 tons, had been underground for 74 years but appears to be well-preserved because it was buried in a mixture of peat and clay.

Amazing what you can find if you dig deep enough :D

That's amazing.
I have always wondered why they did not use them in Omaha to unload troops and leave a few of them on the beach after unloading just as a protection for the next waves against the German heavy gun machine fire.

Believe the priority for production was for LVT4 to the Pacific theatre - apparently a few LVT2 made it to Utah beach

Link to a short film: https://access.historyhit.com/videos/th ... h-dan-snow

And the link to the facebook page of the recovery team: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1382944771880947

I saw that they did use WD40 on the components to get them freed up (as I suggested in a previous post  )
Amazing how good this LVT looks after being underground for over 70 years!
Better condition than a lot of the G503's you find abandoned in fields in some places now...it looks like the best way to store a vehicle is to bury it deep in clay soil
