Re: Ford GPA serial numbers & photos WANTED
Gavin, I thought Eric Rouvez (Mithril) has a comprehensive database compiling as well?
Eric's list or the one you've linked, should be made a Sticky just like the prototype jeep section has.

Re: Ford GPA serial numbers & photos WANTED
Please let us know when it's fixed. In the meantime I just posted this elsewhere here.
In about 1987 I bought a '45 GPW for parts for my script GPW. It turned out to be too good to part out so I refurbished it, drove it for while, and sold it about 20 years ago. It did come with an extra Ford motor that was on the guys junk pile. I kept the motor for my script GPW-37718, which, now that I'm retired, I hope to start on (in a year or two) after I catch up on other things. In looking for parts for the vehicle I'm working now on I found myself nearly trapped in my "parts pile"; actually two jeeps stacked on top of each other, facing that motor in the back seat area. Since I was nearly stuck there and my wife luckily happened to come out to see me about something I convinced her to hand me a wire brush. I already had a flashlight, so I did a little brushing and this is what I found! GPA-345!

It website is running again
Your engine is a very early one as the serial numbers started at GPA1
In 1944 & 1945 some GPA amphibious jeep were dismantled for there engines, diffs and running gear. Spare parts for Standard GPW/MB jeeps.
I would guess that you your engine might of came from one of these early batches that was dismantled.

Re: Ford GPA serial numbers & photos WANTED
I emailed my stuff in, but somehow I noticed it never made it onto the database.
Granted, all I have is a running GPA engine.

I'm looking at purchasing a 42 gpw with a gpa engine. It currently resides in PA. It looks like it wqs double stamped, not sure what's going on there, but the numbers look like GPA 2977 and stamped above it is 1182111.

Re: Ford GPA serial numbers & photos WANTED
Just a quick update on engine GPA-345. I tore it down to inspect it and was cleaning it up in anticipation of what looked to be a quick re-assembly and installation into GPW-37718. It is standard bore with only enough wear to wear off the original cross/hatch honing. I think it was removed from service very early because of a casting flaw in cylinder #3 that allowed oil and coolant to mix over time (just below the travel of the rings). After being pulled it must have been worked on as cylinder #4 was sleeved. Maybe they sleeved the wrong cylinder? When I opened it up the rings were rusted to the sleeve in #4 and so full of carbon that they were frozen to the piston. I had a heck of a time getting it out. The exhaust valve on #4 was so caked with carbon that there was no way there was any flow other than what the gap around the seat area allowed when the valve was up. I dropped it off yesterday to get the #3 cylinder sleeved and years ago I bought a set of NOS 0.020” over GPW pistons and rings so it will live again. My point is that this might not have come from dismantling a GPA but from failing in service when fairly new. How it got out and into the public domain and installed in another Jeep, just to fail again might be an interesting story, but it’s lost to history. It also had an M38/CJ3A front plate, with the forward ear cut off and welded backwards to fit the MB/GPW/CJ2A chassis and a gear-drive crank with the chain installed. The counterweight did hit and smoosh the oil galley plug but the block luckily survived. Obviously Bubba had his way with this engine over the years.
