while swimming on the river that streams around 5km/h... the camshaft gear stopped... our luck was that we just went in a dead end part with no current!!

I have heard that there are also aluminium replacements. Does anybody have experience with them and where can i get them?

I'd try Summit Racing, there's a Cloyes gear set there that looks pretty good. No I haven't tried one, but if they have been in the racing industry for so long, they likely could advise you on the best set. Melling appears to have a fiber gearset (which is nice when you think of it destroying itself VS some other more expensive fix...)

CCKW originally used a fiber timing gear, post war GM trucks changed over to the same aluminum timing gear as installed on M-Series GMC M-211. Memphis Equipment, White Owl, etc, should be a good source.
The WWII era Fiber Timing gears can self destruct due to age and chemistry. Best change them out during engine overhauls. The camshafts for the above mentioned GM engines have same GM part numbers.

Hello,
I had the same thing happen to me about 20 years ago. I replaced the timing gear with an aluminum one and have had no problems since then. If you cannot find an aluminum gear I may have a spare NOS one.

What were the extraction details to get the DUKW home?

A big yellow caterpillar my dad likes to play with brought the dukw home.

My dad is aanwaaien cheerfull if i get myself in trouble with te dukw. I think it reminds him of all the adventures he had with the dukw.

The fibrous timing gear is a ticking time bomb in your engine. These parts are decades old. If you purchase a CCKW, replacing the fiber timing gear should be one of the top things to do on your list of repairs. The aluminum replacements are available from several dealers. Joel mentioned some. Jim Carter Truck Parts, Summit Racing, and Chevs of the 40's are some others. As I recall, the gears are very reasonably priced. I think they were less than $50.00.

Bob Rubino spoke at length about the timing gear issue at the 2018 MVPA convention. As luck would have it, one of the guys I convoyed with to the convention had his CCKW crap out on the way home. Can anyone guess what caused the engine to stop working? If you guessed the fiber timing gear, you are correct.
