CJ-2A front engine plate

Post by Mark Jennings » Fri Oct 02, 2020 4:36 pm

I am looking for a CJ-2A front engine plate with both mounting tabs facing the rear (like an MB / GPW) but for a gear driven cam shaft. I know they exist because I have see a picture of one.

Thanks in advance.

Mark.

Hello,
Please give me a few days, I ask because my original chain driven GPW engine needs work (block bored, crank ground and a crack in the block fixed) so I bought a civilian gear driven engine. I am taking it apart for rebuild today and if the bore, the crank both look good and there are no cracks in the block I will be using these parts and will most likely pull the trigger on the your engine plate.

I will keep you posted and thank you.

Mark.

These were Military parts; intended to put M38 engines into WW2 Jeeps. Got that from Joel. Only one I have ever had.

Thank you. I took the engine apart today and the bore and crank look good I also do not see any cracks. I will drop it off to the machine shop on Monday and should have a better on the over all condition once it is hot tanked and all the grease and oil is gone.

Thank you.

Post war blocks fair better on cracks; I think they are thicker, and for sure, they are made from a better alloy. The NI CR CU on the side indicates that.

I may have one at home. I picked up four motors. One is an early cj.

Early CJ2A engines were chain drive and will have the WW2 engine plate. I doubt that any CJ would have the plate the OP is looking for.

The front plate on the cj2a engine, gear drive, they are a dime a dozen, the ears point back. They were used for quite a few years till the 3A came out. 2 used ones on the auction site for 50 plus post.

Yep, I have three CJ2A engines right now, all gear drive cam, all with the plate having both feet facing aft.

These CJ2A plates are not rare at all, but Joel knows his stuff and perhaps that is some M38 specific purpose plate and rare for that reason. There may be some difference which identifies it as M38 perhaps the generator mounting differs to accommodate the larger 24 volt unit.

The newer plates with the left side foot facing forward were used beginning with CJ3A / M38 production to accommodate the larger dual action fuel pump.

Post War Gear Drive CJ-2A thru early CJ-3A used the Plate configured same as the MB. The Civvy Parts manual does not agree with this but I have witnessed very early CJ-3A Jeeps that had the CJ-2A configuration on intact CJ-3A Jeeps that were 3 or 4 years old.The 49 Willys Parts manual is not clear in this. The Gear Drive CJ-2A, early CJ-3A and the 50's Korean War Gear Drive replacement engines used the CJ-2A/early CJ-3A Plate that. PE-95 Gear Drive Replacement engines also had the WWII style front mount set up.
There was a difference, however, that little Stud for the Generator Brace was usually missing, but the hole was there. I fashioned the missing studs with a Bolt, Nut, and a couple lock washers. I have a Late Korean War issue Front Plate removed from a NOS 50's Korean Era Crate Engines and the stud is not installed.
These late CJ-3A Type Gear Drive Replacement engines with early front plate are described on P. 63 NABHOLTZ, Revised. No Generator Stud, just the hole.
