FREE-LOCK Hub

Post by Bruce W » Mon Apr 29, 2019 9:57 am

I need one only, FREE-LOCK locking hub to replace one that's been destroying itself from the inside out, or the internal parts. If you think you may have one but could use a picture, I can e-mail one. Thanks. BW

Have a set sitting in a bucket that we thought we would take to Aberdeen, if you know anyone going i could take it up there, if not...likely something closer to you, but I do have a set off of an early CJ or M38 from memory. It would have to wait till after Aberdeen is done for time to do anything with it.

I really would like to find a single. If I can’t and we have to put on a pair of another brand or style, I have several sets of DualMatics and Warns. My friend likes her FREE-LOCKs because they a different from the Warns and DualMatics that everybody has. Thanks.

Free Locks require a special "L" Shape Wrench, correct?
Sorry about that, I mixed them up with Cutlass.

Free-Locks were advertised as the easiest hubs on the market to turn with your fingertips, but a wrench was available that had two fingertip-sized bumps on one end. The wrench is, of course, 'way harder to find than the hubs are. BW

Send me a pic of the one you have or want to rebuild. My mail link works.

I know this is an old post. I wanted to know what these looked like and instantly recognized them as the predecessor to the Milemarker Selectro hub.

Nope. Not at all. Whoever made the Selectro Hubs made them for lots of other companies with lots of different names on them, Sears, Wards, etc. I've never seen them with the Free-Lock name on them before. A Selectro hub by any other name is still a Selectro hub. The original Free-Lock's had a bulky aluminum body like a Dualmatic, but with a turn-knob in them similar to what Warn uses. BW

So I recently saw a CJ5 on craigslist with these and was not sure what they were. They match your description. See attached.
