1800 mile original CJ-3A at auction

Post by AFM38A1 » Tue Oct 11, 2022 11:34 am

Just saw this unit as a part of a high end car collection.
Garage kept, 1800 mile all original CJ-3 with top, tools, paperwork and original implements.
The presale estimate is $35-50,000 which seems low to me.
Likely, the auction company is out of its depth here and doesn't know what it is worth.

I'm not a part of the sale, just wanted to make sure the Jeep community knows about this....after all, few would normally look at a sale filled with $500,000-$1 million dollar cars.

If the sale is filled with wealthy sports car buyers, it might go for a bargain.
M38A1 MD 82551. Built 3/1955. Purchased in Nov. 2021.
Former owner/restorer of 1977 Jeep CJ-5 Renegade Levis Edition.
All stock w/factory V-8. Used as a daily driver for 7 years.

Check out the CJ3A page and look under "Stories, History, And Other Cool Stuff" and you will see the engine pictures.

Grill, front bumper, tail lights are bogus. Might overall, be a nice survivor, and some guy with money will pay way more than it is worth, which is whatever he wants to pay. Not $50K, to me.

Why do you say that?

Because it is obviously a repop speedo.

The CJ3A I had did not have the cable guides on the front bumper like that, nor did it have the bug shield. My rear tail lights did not have the chrome ring, but looks like those are good.
So, basically, I was wrong; just ignore me on this one! I should have looked in my CJ3A book first. I should stick to stuff I know instead of guessing.....

I’m with Bob here!

I’ve seen enough invoices and sales literature to know most things were optional and extras including seats, tops, governors, saws and the like.

I would not be surprised if some information is available on actually what options were available.

That radiator cover was an extra $5.29.

The speedometer appears original to me. For comparison here is a picture of the speedometer on my 52 CJ3A survivor. My Cj3A is not near as nice as the one in the auction but I will be watching this one closely to see if I might be tempted to part with mine.

I understand the Jeep with all the accessories...and the original wheels and tire...went for $30,000.

$33,600 sale price. That one is probably the most original survivor CJ3A around. My survivor CJ3A is not as nice but would sell it for a third of that price!
