Post by old arkie » Thu Sep 29, 2022 1:24 pm

folks I have what I think is a cj2 that came with a loose head. the head has the same block number 64--- but has the word JEEP..I found NO serial. but anyone out there that can give me any info about this engine a cast number 5.30 on the head. Not sure what I have but it is a l134 block and all the parts fit as well as the gpw blocks.

Does the head have large, flat ribs on top that run front to rear ??
CJ engine serial number is stamped on top of the engine block. In front of the head, above the water pump.

5-30 is probaly a cast date, probably has willys and jeep on the head, or an aftermarket head as the decimal point is usually a dash 2a heads were both ribbed and non ribbed, what is engine casting number down below dist. or look it up yourself, that list is not complete though.

no ribs but I found under the cj forum photos of the different heads. The one I have seems to be for cj2a and cj3 thanks for your answers

I do not think any cj3a came from the factory with an unribbed head.

Got a link to that post?

I have a 3a engine 1950 with a ribbed head. I will find the 3a book by Bob W and see if it has info on heads in it.

Yes the engines shown in the 3A book al have ribs, as they should; non ribbed heads were not being made then; the M38 used them as did all the Industrial engines. My 51 3A had the ribbed head.
