US Navy tag in a CJ2 or CJ3 Body

Post by ppinotti » Wed Aug 24, 2022 4:18 am

Friends,

With a help from a friend we found the tag below in a CJ3 body, in the dash panel on passenger side.

Is clear is a US Navy Tag, I would like to know if is possible to find some information about the origen or how it left US Navy and went to Brasil.

Our first guess, is the jeeps came from US Navy to Brazilian Marines in the late 1950s.

I would like too suggestion where I can search informations about.

Thank you for your help.

Regards

The Navy definitely bought CJs.
I would say that there is no way you will ever find provenance on how it got to Brazil. The US does not keep records like that. I worked in TACOM and tried to find some. The library has some pictures but no data base of vehicle distribution, etc. It all gets thrown out after ten years.

What other tags are on the jeep. In the firewall should have a tag. Is there anything on the inside dash area? Also what is engine serial number. It is on the boss of engine behind water pump. If you can establish year or production you may be able to search for contracts awarded from Willy's to Navy and them maybe surplus to another country. A lot of digging involved.

Hello Paulo,

Do you have any pictures of the jeep ?
Pictures under the hood ?
I see some other possible data plate holes by your tag picture.

The US Navy did buy 1000 militarized CJ3a jeeps in 1950 for the US Marine Corp.
Some of that batch, were sent to the Royal Dutch Marines, I think 8 of them.
The model was the CJV-35/U, the U standing for "underwater"
These were special radio jeeps, designed at the factory to land in the surf during invasions.
These jeeps were 6 Volt, and also came with WW2 type combat rims.
With the connection to the Brazilian Marines, it is very possible that a small batch was sent to Brazil, as well as Holland.

It could also have been a regular CJ3A, but the Brazilian Marines connection is very interesting !!

The author and expert on this model jeep is also an active G member.

I recently found one of these rare jeeps, here in Florida, that will need a full restoration !

You could have one of these rare Military Jeeps !!

Best Regards,
Ray

Hmmm. Looks a lot like other property tags I’ve seen.

Any features just behind the transmission area and behind the front seats on the body?
