Transfer case shimming quesiton

Post by mcj115 » Wed Jun 22, 2022 1:41 pm

I just acquired a Jeep and am doing maintenance and my detailed inspection. I noticed the rear drive shaft was "loose" upon further inspection the output shaft from the T18 was way too loose. I am working to re-shimming the shaft however I made a mistake and under shimmed the rear speedo housing/bearing cover too tight and pushed the race(bearing cup) into the bearing so there is no (.000) endplay on the output shaft. From what I read there should be ~.002 to .010 endplay/trust on the shaft. Does anyone have a tip on how to pull out the race to get some end endplay?

Please see my crude attached screen shot of what I need to accomplish if I am not descriptive enough.

If you pull outwards on the shaft while tapping on the case around the bearing cup, I believe it will come out some. You don’t need much.

Thank for the replies! I got the shaft shimmed properly. After looking at it stupidly for a half hour since I didn't have the right puller I improvised my own. (See attached)
