Hello All,
I posted this in the MB/GPW tech knowledge, but am re-posting here in case this turns out to be an early CJ2 axle, and the CJ knowledgeable people recognise it:
I have obtained a rear axle complete, but am having difficulty identifying it. It has full-floating axle shafts, and the following cast markings on the housing:
Web, right side, front(forward) face: 212
Web, left side, front (forward) face: diamond with a 'C' inside, and a '6'
Web, rear, long axle side, upper web: three lines:
top line: 6
middle line: US Pat
Bottom line: 1888618 (or similar - very rough!)
Web, rear, long axle side, lower web: three lines:
Top line: X
Middle line: US Pat
Lower line: several digits, indistinct.
The retaining strap that clamps the crown wheel carrier bearing is stamped '16380', a diamond with a 'C' and '23'.
Does anyone recognise these markings, please? What have I got?
Thanks for the help
Mike

Re: Diff Identity Query
Could be CJ, but can't help with the numbers.
First CJ's used left over MB parts. This included the rear axle assembly.
What size brakes does it have ??
The left over axles still used 9" brakes.
When the switch was made to the newer assembly, the brakes went to 11".

Re: Diff Identity Query
The model 23 rear axles with full-floating shafts used in the early CJ’s were not just “left over parts”. They had a 5.38:1 gear ratio, where the MB’s had a 4.88:1 ratio. Checking the ratio is the best way to determine whether the axle is MB or CJ.
All CJ’s up to and including the ‘65 CJ5 still had the 9” brakes, although the drums became outboard mounted in 1953. The ‘66 CJ5 got 10” brakes, not 11’s.
