Air fliter canister for cj2a

Post by 42GPW » Fri Apr 02, 2021 5:39 am

Good morning G Men. I have heard some topics in the past of guys using a dry canister type air filter instead of the oil bath filter. So basically the canister fits in the original oil bath filter how does this work? ( i figure you have to gut it) and what filter am I using to replace that? Thanks for your help.

See this thread viewtopic.php?f=10&t=119440 Dry filter instead of oil bath. Ron sells an Air Cleaner Conversion kit for the MB/GPW https://www.rfjp.com/p-1984-air-cleaner ... 621-k.aspx. I believe that the CJ2A has the same diameter bottom cup, but you should verify.

Been planning to make a dry air filter conversion for my CJ. Key word "Mine". I am always the last project on the list.
I did make a dry filter conversion for a customer on a GPW with the long oil bath filter. Not pancake type. Although I have seen a conversion for the pancake filter.
What I did.
I gutted the filter housing.
Been building homebuilt aircraft for years so I have lots of left over aluminum plate. 6061-T6 was the choice. Pretty stiff and I picked a thicker piece.
I made a disc with a center hole that fit over the long stud that goes down the center of the filter. Drilled several holes around a radius that was inside the inner filter cartridge seal radius and slipped the disc up to the top of the filter can, to the top. This is what the top of the air filter cartridge seats to.
Next, I made a disc out of the same aluminum that fits the bottom of the filter cartridge. Caps the end off. Only hole, the one in the center that fits over the center stud. Put 4 ears on this one to keep the cartridge centered on the disc.
Went to the NAPA Master Filter Catalog I had and found an air filter cartridge that fit what I was building.
Slide everything in place. Put the wing nut on the stud to hold it all together. Put the oil cup on. Obviously no oil. And it's off to the woods.
Air comes into the filter the normal way. Down the outside of the cartridge. Through the filter element. Up through the holes in the top plate and out the normal exit.
Don't have the air filter # on hand. It's hanging on the shop wall.
Don't know that the # for a GPW would be the same as a CJ. ????
The measuring process and filter look up would be the same.

I’ve done a couple. Cut out the oil soaked element, the paper filter from a Pontiac Fiero is a perfect fit. Costs less than $10.00. Easy conversion, no more messy oil to deal with.

Nice. That's actually my next plan once I'm done installing the Crown flywheel ring gear that I got from 4wheelonline.

I will be using a Wix filter for this kind of conversion.

I literally did one yesterday for a Donaldson; used a 97 Ford Ranger filter. Cut the guts out first.
