Hoping someone can help here.
Not sure I actually have a problem. Just making sure I don’t before buttoning up And trying to start.
Background: rebuilt motor previous owner, sat for years.
From all I’ve seen so far this is clean and has been rebuilt thoroughly .
It’s a CJ motor (has timing gears, not chain)
Head is off to locate TDC on #1.
Here’s my question.
Rotating the engine by hand (Clockwise looking from front toward engine) using a wrench on the crank nut, I get what’s best described as “clicking” or even better, “ratcheting” sounds
This is in the clockwisedirection.
If I rotate in the counter clockwise, The sound isnt there. It’s not The same sound
Is this normal sound, perhaps the timing gears
Clacking together because there is no oil splash yet?
I tried removing things like starter, fuel pump, etc to be sure a bolt wasn’t touching something.
No change. Push in clutch and rotate. Again no change.
Anyone ever hear this?
See reply for You-tube video link
Easier to hear then my lame description

Re: New engine.. rotating by hand.. “ratcheting” noise
I was the starter. I didn’t realize that the bendix(sp?) wasn’t retracting back into the housing away from the flywheel
Dugh moment.

Just read this. I had not heard the noise you describe before. Glad you found the problem!
