Spring Shackle bushing Bolt

Post by Kurt » Tue Jul 28, 2020 4:30 pm

Hello,

I have a 1958 Willys CJ5, it is a work/play jeep and I am getting ready to replace the rubber core spring shackle bushings, all 12 of them. The rubber wears out once the center tube of the bushing goes. I was thinking if I had grease bolts I could get more life out of them

The bolts that are in the bushings now are 7/16”. I been looking at greaseable bolts and found grade 8 grease bolt https://www.rockjock4x4.com/CE-91127.

Does anyone have any experience using this bolt for their spring shackles?

Thanks for your time.

Kurt

Te CJ-5 came equipped with Silent Bloc Bushings at the Pivot ends, a 7/16" bolt is used at the pivot ends. They give no problems and require no lubrication. Best leave them the way they are. Doubt you will find 7/16" Bolts with grease fittings.

Really :o

You must have over looked the link above?

I have confirmed it with RockJock and have purchased one to see for myself, this is a grade 8 grease blot.

Yes, I missed the reference to the Rock Jock bolts.
The grease may have an adverse effect on the rubber. in the bushings.

CRAP, now you have done it. I didn't think about the possibility of the petroleum-based grease oxidizing the rubber.

The bolt should not be able to turn inside the bushing’s steel sleeve. The sleeve should be locked in place between the shackle sides or the hanger bracket by the bolt’s squeezing of the sides together. All of the movement should be in the rubber. At the same time, any grease that comes into the space between the bolt and the rubber bushing should not be able to migrate out onto the rubber because the ends of the sleeve should be held tightLy against the shackle sides or the hanger bracket.
If your jeep wore the bolts and/or the bushing sleeves, and probably the shackle sides and hanger brackets, it’s because they were loose. They shouldn’t have been.
