Advanced timing to about 8 degrees BTC, as suggested. Runs like hammered out chit. I suppose you guys know what a blivit is....

Vacuum reading? Dwell reading? Idle RPM?

Don't have vacuum reading. Dwell is at 42, Idle is at 650,

I think the carb is the culprit. It runs great with the timing at 5 degrees BTC and a clean set of plugs.

What kind of English is that?
Please explain.
Taking on board & letting us know the results from Rick's suggested "Vacuum reading? Dwell reading? Idle RPM?", would be helpful.

Reminder that this engine is 30'a technology long stroke design and not a Jack Rousch high performance engine.

Carb has been mentioned a time or two... has the mixture screw been adjusted to provide the correct fuel at idle? When it was advanced to 8 degrees did it stumble or hesitate when you first tip in the throttle? Or did it just pop and cough or what?

Normally I’ve had overly rich issues when there is a vacuum leak. To overcome the leak mixture screws often are backed way out. The weak vacuum at idle will suck in just enough fuel at idle but it will be dumping fuel into engine once the vacuum comes up (decelerating or at elevated stable rpm). As others have suggested a vacuum gauge really is a good tuning and diagnostic tool. I’m thinking a vacuum leak based on what’s been shared so far.

A "blivit" is ten pounds of chit in a five pound bag.

Spent the afternoon checking and rechecking points gap and dwell. Dwell is spot on 42 degrees. Should be correct. Timing has been tried at 5 degrees BTC and 8 BTC. Not much difference. Fouls the plugs right away.

I do not have a vacuum gauge. Yes, yes.... you guys can keep asking about it, but I don't have one. If I did, I would have used it by now.

Carb must be dumping fuel. heck, I can see it in the exhaust.... black smoke. Carb idle screw adjustment is at 1 full turn.

Thanks for all the input. Pretty sure at this point it is a carburetor issue.... not even sure where a vacuum leak is possible on this engine.

One would save a lot of unproductive time, money & headaches by getting one from Harbor Freight for $15.
42°dwell or 0.020" point gap both measure the same thing only different ways.
One mechanically the other electrically. If one is correct so is the other.
Vacuum leaks cause lean running.
1.5 turns out of mixture screw is a usual starting/end point.

Sounds to me like the carb. is flooding. Black exhaust & quickly fouling plugs.
Vacuum leak. #1 suspect. Carb. base gasket. Especially if the gasket has a diffuser with the dreaded brass rivets. #2. manifold gasket. Spraying carb. cleaner on each with the engine running will tell. But this condition causes rough idle. Poor acceleration and no smoke. Engine smooths out with a little choke or when sprayed, there is a leak.
Did you ever look down the carb. throat with the engine idling ???
You should not see gas coming out of anything.

Just a reminder to all trying to help. The "F-134" has no intake manifold gaskets, the Intake manifold on the "F-Head" is cast into the cylinder head. Also, the F-134 used a thin Carburetor base gasket with no diffuser or grommets for the mounting bolt holes.

As mentioned above, there is no intake manifold on this engine. There is a single vacuum line that attaches just below the carb. Will run that down with some either this morning and see if there is a leak. Carb is the single barrel Carter.

I work on a ranch in the remote Imnaha Canyon. I'm 4 hours from the nearest Wal Mart. Mail comes on Wednesday and Friday. We don't just run over to Harbor Freight for new tools.

Also have an M274 platform hauler here. Got that going two years ago. Great ranch tool. Also have an FC150 that had been repowered with a straight 6 out of a '62 Comet. Went through the ignition on that last season and got it humming like a sewing machine. This Willys CJ I got running on 3 cylinders for two seasons then pulled the engine and had rebuilt. Soooo... Spent a lot of time and energy on these vehicles. Not my first rodeo. But there is so etching amiss with this engine.

Thanks again for all the advice. Going to check vacuum leaks.

Looking down the throat of the carb, at idle, a steady stream of fuel pouring in.

Float setting? Not knowing which carb, can’t give you correct answer now.

Pulled carb. Puddle of fuel in the intake.
