Flathead in CJ -- how does that work?

Post by Fushigi Ojisan » Mon Aug 19, 2019 6:04 pm

Saw this photo and was curious how it would affect handling/driveability, and the sheer logistics of the thing

The picture make it look like its practically bolt-in

There is hardly a motor made that someone hasn't tried to stick in a jeep. Nothing surprises me. Weight and torque along with more horsepower than what is was designed for are all drawbacks to me. Must be a Bubba thing.

It might be good to be aware that there was a popular old Ford V8 side valve engine, we used to refer to as a 60 horse. That engine's overall specification was very similar to the Jeep's L134 side valve engine.
This particular V8's small bore & short stoke really has less torque than the long stroking L134.

Cubic capacities were 136/134 cubic inch, horsepower 60/60 & torque 94/105 lb⋅ft.
This V8 engine was fitted to Fords through the 30's & 40's as well as to Ford Pilots into the mid 1950's plus Simca Vedettes [I owned a convertible & one time] into the mid 1960's.

"At just 136 cubic inches and 60 HP, the V8-74 flathead was the smallest production V8 made by Ford Motor Company. Produced from 1937-1940, it was used as a budget, entry level engine in Ford passenger cars, but did not achieve much popularity due to its low horsepower rating."

Lifted from the web. The Ford 60 is a tiny V8, they look great in 3/4 midget racers and belly tank lakesters.

The one in the picture is not a 60 its the larger later 90HP.

Thank you all, was just curious about it since its an image I've had for a while.

My late father told the story about how he and some other mechanics managed to shoehorn a Buick straight-eight into a Jeep (my guess it was during training at Fort Benning). He told me the Lieutenant opened the hood, not realizing anything was wrong, put it back down, and when he started off he buried the rear wheels in the ground from spinning out.

Been ten years next week, wish he was still around to ask about it.
