Parts for CJ3B from M38A1

Post by Av8erdunn » Thu Aug 08, 2019 3:36 pm

I have acquired a 53 cj3b and need some parts for it. I need an engine, radiator, dive shafts, steering wheel, etc and have found a M38A1B in bad shape that runs. If I buy it for parts will the parts I mentioned be interchangeable to my CJ3B? I just don’t want to buy it and not have a lot of interchangeable parts for the entire drivetrain.

Thanks in advance.

Congratulations on your "new" jeep!

I'm no expert but do have some ideas.

The M38A1 is a militarized version of a CJ-5. Now, if you ask your question perhaps it will be easier to exclude some items.

The military engine should be a 134 cu in F-Head engine so physically it could fit into the 3B. Is the M38A1 equipped with waterproof electronics (with the sealed connections, etc)? The CJ-3B started life (shortly after the first M38A1) as a 6V (yours should be a 6V) and eventually was converted to 12V in its later life. That's not to say you can't convert components attached to the engine, if you want.

The frames and bodies are different so there may be issues with those components.

For a start, the front engine plates are different where the generatir mounts.
Rear Prop Shafts are same, CJ-3B Front is 1" Shorter. (M-38A1 Wheelbase is 81", CJ-3B is 80"). There are some excellent replacement steering wheels out there in OD and Black that will be more cost effective. M-38A1 Radiator will not fit CJ-3B. M-38A1 Springs are too long if you do need springs.

Well heck! I’m glad the guy didn’t call me back now. I was hitched up ready to go but he never returned a call or message.
